Anyone else frustrated with the construction on A1A in Daytona? Here is how we can get FDOT to fix it.
The project on A1A/N Atlantic Ave is intended to make the road safer for everyone, but there are some serious problems that are actually making it more dangerous. As a result, I've compiled a comprehensive report detailing the safety and access issues on A1A in Daytona Beach.
The Core Issues Highlighted in the Report:
- The New Raised Crosswalks (Speed Bumps): These are being placed on a high-volume, 4-lane corridor without proper vertical warning signage, making them highly unpredictable for tourists and causing sudden braking.
- Dangerous Median Cutouts & Access Issues: Cutouts aren't deep enough to safely hold a mid-to-full-size car, leaving vehicle rears sticking out into the active left lane.
- Impossible U-Turns: Narrowed lanes and widened sidewalks have severely reduced the turning radius at major intersections, forcing standard cars to do dangerous 3-point turns.
- Halifax Ave Traffic Diversion: Drivers trying to avoid the A1A stop-and-go are pouring onto Halifax, creating an unsafe spike in residential traffic.
- Cyclist Safety & Poor Lighting: The absence of a shoulder is forcing bikes into tight 30 MPH lanes with aggressive drivers, all while current street lighting remains incredibly poor at night.
I've created this report to share with city/FDOT leadership, local media, and the public to address these concerns. If anyone else is frustrated or concerned, please email the FDOT project communications manager at Debbie.Cople@dot.state.fl.us or contact city leadership with the document attached.
