Friendly reminder to wear a helmet.
I'm a newbie into bmx at 33 years old and long time mtber/longboarder/inline skater/snowboarder that almost never wore a helmet. Yesterday, my wife begged me to bring my full face helmet to a local pumptrack. So, i decided to give it a try and at least show some safety for the kids there.
Well... 15 minutes into my first day with a helmet, my front wheel slipped over the bank and i had one of the worst crashes of my life, my head banged hard on the pavement at almost full speed. I hurt my right shoulder, arm, knee and pinky finger but my head is intact.
I still can't believe how lucky i am. I'm pretty hurt but able to go on with life, so i decided to NEVER ride again without a helmet.
We never know how close we are to tragedy just because we want to look cool. i'm glad i learned the lucky way, because the other way might have been too late to learn.
As one guy said once after having the same experience as me... I LOVE HELMETS.
