Books with ambiguous endings where the reader questions everything written by the end of it
I’m looking for stories like the title of this post. I read a few of Paul Tremblay’s better books and really enjoyed the way he left the reader wondering about their preconceived notions about the plot before the book’s end. I thought he was going to be my new favorite author, but I really did not vibe with some of his work, so I’m looking for some suggestions.
The best books I read by Tremblay were Head Full of Ghosts, Disappearance at Devil’s Rock, and Cabin at the End of the World (in that order of preference). I’ve also read Survivor Song and Pallbearer’s Club, which were okay and awful respectively.
I enjoy Chuck Palahniuk’s earlier work and I’m a sucker for pretty much any Stephen King novel. I have been curious about Bag of Bones and Revival. I’m interested in Japanese horror as well. I really loved the Ring series, but did not read the additional works after Spiral (also, RIP Koji Suzuki, your works had a tremendous influence in my taste in horror). I’ve enjoyed all three Uketsu books, and House of Leaves quite a lot too.
I’m currently reading 14 by Peter Clines and have Tender is the Flesh on my shelf. If anyone has any suggestions for stuff in the vein of what I listed above, I’d be really happy to hear it.
EDIT: Thanks all for your great recommendations! I look forward to checking out your suggestions soon.
