I would like to go back to MTG but I feel old

Hi, I'm 33 and I used to play with friends when I was 12 - 20

Premodern is so tempting and I'd like to casually play in a chill environment but tbh I fear that I'll be the only bald guy with a mustache between teenagers and I feel bad about it. Anyone like me, or any suggestions?

Bare minimum QA? At WOTC? Never.

Another day, another drop, another typo. Long live WOTC's inability to produce a solid product.

Edit: Corrected the self-inflicted irony. Maybe I should work for WOTC? Hey, send me an offer! XD

Edit2: "Just a period", "Get a grip", "must be delusional", yada yada, mates... stop drinking the kool-aid. Demand better. Billionaires will continue to sell you slop at $49.99 a bite if you let them. I could have also brought up how half these drops look like they've been made with AI (especially the Dark Rit), but I tried to be nice, really!

Casual players!! Do you play to win or play to chill with homies

What a coincidence but me again with another discussion, when you play with friends do you opt to go for the win or let everyone play out their combos and go into political gameplay for fun. I feel that new players entering edh tend to immediately wanna go for a win when casual is meant to be well “casual”.

Why are these not Legendary Creatures?

Please don't just say it's UB slop, I genuinely want to know if there is a reason these are not legendary creatures besides them being commons. Both characters in the art are actual Marvel characters, despite the names of the cards not using their hero names.

I designed and 3d printed card-sized tokens for keeping track of your board state. Link in body.

Hi folks, I play a few token-heavy decks and got tired of stacking dice haphazardly on token cards. So I made these card-sized “tokens” with spots to put dice to indicate power, toughness, and number of tokens. You can find the model here.

So far I have three specific custom tokens: Orc Army, Soldier, and Construct.

But I also have a “frame” (see pic #3) that you can put over any token card you have to turn it into something that’s easier to read and track.

Take a look and have fun. I’d welcome your feedback!

MTG pricing surge last 6-8 months

I understand this must be discussed at length and I am aware of the recent surge in interest in MTG due to some sets such as FF and the like. I recently got into Magic in November and see that almost ALL of the cards pricing have skyrocketed. I had purchased the Ruinous Powers precon from 40K for 170 it goes for 300 now. Even the in Universe House of Horrors precon Endless punishment was 80 msrp in November is now going for 200….
Will this cool off or is this new norm just due to supply demand? Just curious. New here sorry if was asked.

These would be insane with partner

If all mono colored commanders had partner, these commanders would be disgusting.

What would be your favorite commander pair?

This is exactly the stipulation of my commander cube, and yes, its really fun seeing these combos: https://cubecobra.com/cube/about/PU

I made a deck box for my favorite deck.

I have been trying to spend more time on hobbies and less on my phone doomscrolling. I am still a beginner to woodworking skill wise, and decided the best way to practice is to do, so I made a deck box. It is far from perfect and has quite a few mistakes that I would like to do better on next time, but it was fun to make and I hopefully learned and got a tiny bit better at woodworking in the process.

I am hoping to make a hobbit themed box before pre-release. Not sure if it will happen, or if I will just end up 3d printing something.

If anyone is curious, the commander is rev, tithe extractor, and the deck is a pretty standard just for fun bracket 2-3 tribal. I made it as a joke, but it ended up being a lot of fun to play. https://moxfield.com/decks/hRWc7GZdWUyxnJ2MSwf7uQ

My first Scene Token! 4 goblins drawn in pencil, what do u think?

Hi everyone!

I finally built up the courage to start posting here (hope this is the right place for this!). Not too long ago, I started drawing my own custom Magic tokens.

With all the hype around the upcoming Hobbit expansion, I really wanted to draw something from Tolkien's universe, so I decided to try making a Goblin "Scene Token". I always work with traditional media, mostly using pencils, and I love trying to blend my designs with my passion for nature. I hope you like how it turned out!

https://preview.redd.it/vm5efkrunnbh1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=72459de32081b238017ca5af5b77c0355b948818

I had a blast with the drawing process, even though it was quite a challenge to make them work both individually and as a complete scene.

I’d love to get your feedback! What do you think of the style, and would you run these in your games? I’d also love to know your thoughts on this kind of composition and what other "scene tokens" you think I should try next.

Thank you so much! 🐇✨

PS: For anyone curious, I’ve uploaded these and some other designs to my little Etsy shop, and u can also check out my drawing process over on Instagram (links are in my profile if you want to take a look). But mostly, I just really wanted to share my art with the community. Hope you enjoy them!

Does this interaction work as intended?

So, a few days ago I was playing a game with a friend, and I was running a [[Baba Lysaga, Night witch]] deck. After a few turns I drew [[Screams from within]] and attached it to one of my creatures. After sacrificing both the aura and the creature it was attached to, we decided that the aura's condition was in fact satisfied, and I returned it to the battlefield. Were we correct? Is this how the interaction works?

How common are "only collector" people at your LGS?

I've been playing magic since ~2015 with varying intensity, but spent my fair share of time at LGS at FNM, sometimes during the daytime, at weekends etc. Last saturday I was going through the bulk boxes at an LGS looking for pauper playable cards when some guy that neither I (nor the store owner) knew came in and proceeded to buy two displays of marvel collector boosters, sat down in front of me and began opening them.

I eventually began talking to him and he said he recently stopped buying Pokemon cards because he was dissatisfied with their recent business practices (I didn't ask further). Apparantly he doesn't really know how to play magic, he said he tried playing the tutorial on arena but didn't enjoy the game and stopped before it ended. Every other card he presented his pulls to me and commented on how great they looked, mostly for the alt arts. Those that he would show to me he would put into sleeves and stack on an extra pile. He went on to complain how the rares should have better artwork because they are rares and the bad art should go on the commons and "unrares" (uncommons?). I don't think he checked the prices of anything he opened and only sold one card to the store because it was a duplicate and the owner offered him 40€ for it.

After he was done he purchased the one scene box the store had in stock, opened it with the same process and proceeded to look for other boxes to open. He was disappointed because after that one the store only had regular booster boxes left and the cards in those are undesirable to him.

Pondering what to do, his cards still all over the table, he asked the owner if there are other games that have "rare boxes" he could buy, but the store was mostly out of product because of product allotment difficulties in lorcana and riftbound.

He then basically scooped up all of his unsleeved cards from the table into his backpack raw and left the store.

This whole experience is still a bit unreal to me, I've never experienced anything like it in over ten years of playing magic and visiting nerd stores. I shouldn't complain because I got a playset of hawkeyes bow for free out of it but still...

How often is stuff like this happening in stores you frequent? Am I going crazy for thinking this is weird?

Edit: typo

Easter egg in Adventure Time!

Doing a little Adventure Time revisit and saw "naya" as soon as this equation hit the screen.
This is season 10 episode 11 "Temple of Mars"
I did a little google and couldn't find anyone talking about it so had to bring it up!
So many color combination names sprinkled throughout this equation.
I see Esper, Grixis, Boros, Naya, Jund, Jeskai, Sultai, Bant, Abzan, Temur
Probably more, this chalkboard is PACKED lol

EDIT: I found an 8 year old thread talking about it! They may mention more finds in the comments so worth including <3

I love Magic and I can't find a way to enjoy it anymore.

I started MTG in Tempest and played semi-competitively in from Planeshift to Fifth Dawn. Then, I came back with Final Fantasy.

Here are my major gripes that ruing my enjoyment due to the current state of the game:

  1. Mythic Rarity. It's crazy to me how people put up with this change. Back in the day, if you bought a case of a new set, you would at the very least get a playset of every card in the set (sure there are some outliers). Over time, I purchased 6 boxes of FF and never obtained a single Sephiroth and nothing close to a playset of the other mythic cards. This is absolutely crazy.
  2. The State of Standard. I have far more disposable income today than I did back in Odyssey and yet it feels infinitely harder to make a competitive standard deck today than it was then. The amount of cards in standard today has to rival the amount of cards that were in the Extended format back in the day. The three year rotation is actually crazy. The power level of these cards today is actually bananas.
  3. The Breakneck Pace of Set Releases. I have been back for a tiny bit over a year now and EIGHT sets have come out...Eight! By the time you learn all the cards and what they do, somehow obtain the cards, and then show up to your LGS for FNM...the next set is already out. This is madness.
  4. The Emphasis of Commander. I dislike the commander format. I get it appeal and I'm happy for the people that enjoy it. I fully understand that Commander is the most popular format there is now and due to that MTG has leaned into that audience heavily. It just feels like WOTC has forgotten about every other format due to this though. Playing standard right now feels more like a chore than a fun, enjoyable experience.
  5. Cards do too much / Power creep. The vast majority of Mythic, Rare, uncommon, and even common cards just have way too much text on them. Not only does the front have a full text box, but the card even flips over to a dual sided card with another full text box. This would okay if it was only the Rares+, but the majority of uncommons and commons are filling the text box as well now. Even uncommon 1 drops are somehow a Savannah Lion that has a full text box of positives.
  6. Nowhere to play Standard. My LGS near me has been unable to get 8 people for a FNM and has now transitioned FNM to modern. I don't want to play this game online (it's just not for me).

I love this game, but I feel like the game doesn't respect me as a player anymore.

Do I just play prereleases? (which are still a ton of fun) Do I just quit and move to another TCG?

Why isn't this played in Commander IRL more often?

I see it on Arena all the time now and just added it to my Izzit deck. It's crazy good for preventing Commanders for just 1 mana.
