interested in pursuing a phd in plant pathology. is it the norm to cold email potential advisors?

As the title says. I’m a current masters student working on several first reports and am planning on applying to PhD programs for the 2027-2028 cycle. I’m seeing a lot of mixed information on whether or not it is appropriate to cold email potential advisors, and get the impression that it is extremely field dependent. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

hi all, I’m attempting to analyze data describing week of mortality according to factors of block, plant variety, and pathogen isolate. my qq plot doesn’t look too bad, but my variances fail the levene’s test (p < 0.001). I’ve tried transforming the data a million ways to get it to pass, but it just won’t, even when using Box-Cox. I’ve read differing opinions about whether or not homogeneity actually matters in ANOVA, so I was wondering if you all had any opinion. I have five blocks, three varieties, and six isolates. there is no missing data, if that matters.
