New Manager proposed eliminating my department and job because AI is going to do it all soon anyway

Word leaked out that a relatively young, new manager suggested in a meeting with other managers of the same rank that my department should be eliminated because AI will be doing it all eventually anyway. First of all, without going into the specifics this is simply not true. In fact I would argue if anything the new manager’s job is more likely to be eliminated by AI before mine.

Supposedly the other managers shut the conversation down, but people are both nervous and pissed, especially since my company just filled a couple of open positions in my department. And people are suspicious of the leak itself. Why would this information be shared if not to make people anxious in order to squeeze more work out of us and tamp down any requests for more money, better work life balance, etc.

Ok, get it out, but afterwards how would you handle this situation professionally. We do have a union, and as much as I like unions our current leadership has been supine instead of standing up to management.

Obligations to college for book written during sabbatical?

I’m eligible to take a sabbatical. I have been working as time allows on a book related to my discipline. I’m planning to use my sabbatical to finish the book.

My question is what is my obligation to my institution when the book is finished? I ask because my college only recently began offering sabbaticals and there is nothing in our faculty handbook or administrative handbook related to ownership, copyright, royalties, etc.

Ubuntu Studio — WI-FI issue

I installed Ubuntu Studio on an old Mac Pro to test it out. Install went fine, but I am unable to connect to (or even see) my WI-Fi.

I went to WI-Fi & Networking in the System Setting Menu. I don't see my network. I tried clicking the + button. No idea what I'm doing at this point.

Apple cuttings opportunity

We bought our house a couple of years ago. Previous owner went scorched earth before selling, sold the 100 year old walnuts and oak trees, leveled everything else. Pure grass.

I was talking to my farmer neighbor last night (he's the one who told me about what happened to my property before I bought it), and he mention he is selling his farm. Kids don't want to farm. New owner will probably bulldoze the orchard. I've seen it happen over and over in my neck of the woods. No, I don't have the money to buy it or even a part of it.

Neighbor said I am welcome to getting some cuttings before it sells. He has fond memories of picking apples with his family when he was a kid. Unfortunately, no one has lived in the house for decades, and the orchard is overgrown and in pretty rough shape. It's a deer and nettles and hemlock and multifloral rose paradise.

I said I'd love to. However, I've spent all morning looking for rootstock, I'm thinking dwarf root stock, but most everything is sold out. And before anyone asks, no, he doesn't want anyone else on his land.

What is the best way to get these started? I'm open to just planting them as is, but I was hoping to get at least one of each variety. His orchard is about 3 acres and he has probably about 20 to 30 different varieties.
