Garden Tilling

So I am rehabbing my grandparents' old home and gardens (near the airport). This includes rebuilding the soil in about a quarter acre at the back of the property. I have had several loads of material from ChipDrop.com delivered over the last year or so. I raked it out and have left it to compost in place.

However, as I began to try tilling this few inches of decomposing chips into the red clay, before adding another layer of chips....it seems the first layer is already too deep for the tines of the walk-behind to reach the clay! Doh!

Seems too small a space for a big ol' farm tractor. But does anyone have a lawn tractor-sized tiller attachment? Any recommendations and/or help would be greatly appreciated...

Backyard Grape Giveaway

So I am in North Carolina, suburban, zone 7/8, hard clay soil just 1/4" down, plenty of sun on open hilltop. I have planted apples, pears, and cherries in my front yard, as an "edible sidewalk " for the neighborhood. I have an entire fenceline in berries (4y.o. neighbor didn't know what berries were....and may have overreacted).

Now I want to plant four varieties of grapes between the houses! Suggestions for what mix of varieties to plant?

I seem to have failed at my first try of grafting fruit trees. After not being able to find grafting tape locally, a friend shipped me some silicone grafting sleeves. Not sure if these are bad, or if I cut my angles too poorly, or just what... Would love a more knowledgeable opinion.

I planted all of these (apples, pears & cherries) out front, as an "edible sidewalk" for the neighbors to share. Hope I haven't led anyone on...
