I’m rereading GoF for the umpteenth time, and the thought occurred to me… why didn’t Arthur take in Winky after she was given clothes? He expressed dismay at her treatment and sympathy for Winky. She could have gone to the Burrow and been a help to Mrs. Weasley. I know it’s mentioned that only large estates and manors had a house elf but would a disgraced free elf turn their nose up at serving in a smaller wizards home?
