Need advice on how to communicate my availability to employers

Im a recent ESCI graduate, and Im lucky enough to live near a cleanup site with a lot of jobs available. So, as many people do, I sprayed and prayed with applications. I ended up accepting an internship at a top company, full time, good pay, doing things i’m really excited about.

Here’s the thing though. I have an interview with another great company for a permanent position with significantly better pay + benefits. I’d obviously rather have this position, but I’ve already done all the onboarding for the internship and I’m going to start in a week.

These are both government positions, and onboarding tends to take forever. For example, interview to offer to start date process took 6 weeks for the internship.

My question is, should I tell the permanent employer about my internship end date so I don’t have to flake out and can complete the 8-10 week internship since it’s already going to take almost that long to do the onboarding? Or would that hurt my chances? Thanks.
