Bono's way of speaking
Has anyone else ever pondered about the way Bono speaks? The only way I can think to describe it is.. poetic? Larger than life? Here's some quotes that came to mind:
"Thinking here in rock n rolls great cathedral that is Madison Square Garden. Thinking in this moment about all the pilgrims, all the pioneers that got us all here. The saints and the heretics, the poets and the punks that now make up the hall of fame. It's a dangerous thing, this business of building idols, but at least rock n roll is not at it's best about worshipping sacred cows. It's about the thousands of voices gathered in one great unwashed congregation like tonight. For a lot of us here, rock n roll just means one word: liberation. Political, sexual, spiritual liberation. That's what it means."
"So, we're making a DVD here tonight. Thank you for being a part of the film, the little movie we're making tonight, grazie mille. You kind of invented the movies though, didn't you? Yea. The stained-glass windows, they were the first movies. Stories told through colour projected by sunlight. The duomo just up the road is like the first cinema in Italy. I don't know what I'm talking about here but, excusez-moi. Anyway, I can talk if I want to."
You must know what I'm getting at. There's been many of these such quotes that are very poetic in nature. Do Bono's words make sense to you? Does he mine some kind of deep truth with his words when he gets going like this? Or is he putting his foot in his mouth?
This isn't a criticism, just an observation I've had for years. I think Bono is a good man. But I wouldn't ever call him down to earth or relatable. I think the way he speaks has something to do with that. The other guys don't talk like that in the slightest. I can't imagine Bono as a regular kind of guy like I can with some of my other favourite frontmen. Some of those guys I can completely see how they were just regular people who got famous.
Am I articulating myself well enough? Has anyone felt the same way? Any anecdotes or feelings you'd like to share?
