The music videos for the new album

Follow the link, it's a post about U2 in Juchitepec, filming for Street Of Dreams I suppose.

We know about the shoot in Mexico City, we know about a shoot in a Los Angeles bar, where they also performed a new song called Silencio. I read many rumors that more filming was done.

I believe they will put out several videos, at least for the singles. Maybe these videos will intertwine. Like they are starting their trip in a Los Angeles bar, driving down the calle de los suenos with their bus to Mexico City, from there it's going down even more south. And maybe then the tour will be announced with a video drop where they end up in some destination in Mexico, where the story they may have filmed will end.

Why all this hate??

In tiktok, I see a lot of U2 haters just because of one thing. The 1988 Grammy. Most people just Don't Know U2 and start to hate just because The Joshua Tree win MJ album Bad. And most people don't listen to The Joshua Tree. For me, The Joshua Tree is better than Bad.

U2 New York

On September 11th 2001 I was driving to work listening to the Elevation CD. My favorite track on the album was/is "New York", I used to always listen to the track a couple of times when I played the CD including on that day.

I still had the CD on as I pulled into my office complex parking lot. I changed to the radio while I parked and the news said a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. In my head I assumed a Cessna or something. Sad, but no big deal.

When I walked in my office building the conference room by my entrance was packed with people standing around the big screen TV. I went in to see what was going on just in time to see the second plane hit and the world change.

Now I cry every time the song comes on.

Hey, got a question about the Achtung Super Deluxe..

Alright so I'm a total Zooropa fanboy. It's the album that non-fans are fans of and I've seen it change people's minds in real time. Twice.

Since they quietly added it as another disc amongst the many in the super deluxe, did they at least do the decent thing and give it a facelift aka remaster? Or is it what I expect and just another copy of the original? For an album released in 1993, I find it's rather quiet and you gotta really crank it to make it come alive.

Could one of you out there please tell me if it's a remaster or not? Haven't gotten a clear answer everywhere I've looked.

The Lonely Life of a U2 Fan

I don't know if it's the same for anyone else, but I know no other major U2 fans.

Sure, I know one or two people who might own a couple of the big albums and have seen a live show, but I don't know anyone with the same level of U2 fandom that I have.

I long for someone to geek out with over a pint.

I'd love to talk about old b-sides, the fact that Rejoice is their great lost early single, Edge's guitar sound on Deep in the Heart, the best 90s remix, the comparative merits of Mercy/Luckiest Man, different versions of Slow Dancing, the Hong Kong demos, Heartland, the Zoo TV tour, Little Things, best show closers etc etc.

As it is, my ever-suffering wife bears the brunt. When U2 puts out new music, I spout lyrical to her; she puts on a brave face and tries to look interested for five minutes maximum. But ultimately, she can't stand U2 ("the music is okay but Bono does my head in") and that's the case for most people I know. There was no one to talk to when the EPs came out.

It's always been the same. I got into the band aged 7 in 1984. No one in my class at school even knew who they were at that stage. When the Joshua Tree hit, I was 10 and most of my classmates were into Kylie and Bros.

And I know that Zoo TV is retrospectively deemed U2's cool era, but let me tell you that there was nothing cool about liking U2 aged 15 in the Midlands in 1992. Nothing.

That's why I'm glad this sub-reddit exists. I joined Reddit so I could geek out with people over my favourite band.

I don't always agree with people on here, and they probably don't always agree with me, but it's nice to be able to have an outlet and a virtual pint with like-minded people.

Cheers. 🍻

4' U2 CD

I wanted to share this cool concert sign I found. It's a 4 foot tall CD that was supposedly used as venue decor on U2's All Because of You tour. I got it along with some other really awesome stuff from someone who used to work at a production company that put on major concerts.

Now it lives on the wall of my home studio.

Potential "Silencio" Riff Found?

Hey U2 family,

Zach here. Perused the group for a few years, just joined & excited to contribute!

I'm sure many of you have heard Bono's talk of the new punk rock track, "Silencio", on the new album. The grainy clip surfaced of the band debuting the track, but I couldn't gather anything from it, others were comparing it to "The Fly". This immediately brought me back to an old Edge video.

The video has Edge & Dallas in Jacknife Lee's studio debuting Edge's Fender Stratocaster in 2016. I remembered hearing the riff, 4 min mark & on, back in 2016 & it immediately made me think of "The Fly". Being that Jacknife seems to be heavily involved in producing the new LP, I thought the other day that maybe this is the riff to the new "Silencio".

Give it a listen, I will hyperlink it below, and let me know what you think. Even if it isn't "Silencio", I'd love to hear it on a track in the future. Great Edge riff!

Edge Stratocaster Video

Thanks and looking forward to what's next,

Zach

My birthday gift to myself!

I never thought I’d put my hands on a Pop vinyl in a near future because every time it appeared it was so expensive, but I was lucky enough to find the 2018 reissue for a reasonable price on Amazon. Didn’t think twice.

It’s the first new LP in my collection! All of the other ones I have are from the 80s/ 90s so this was a very nice different addition. I couldn’t be happier with it. This album deserves so much more appreciation.

Making of the Joshua Tree in brief...

Thought I'd share this condensed version of the making of Joshua Tree, according to interviews the band did at the time...

late December 1985: U2 officially begin writing & rehearsing songs at Adam's recently-purchased Danesmoate House shortly before Christmas according to Larry in the TV GAGA interview... This marked the end of a six-month break following the Unforgettable Fire tour.

30 January 1986: U2 perform "Womanfish", "Trip Through Your Wires" (in its early incarnation) and the Bob Dylan cover "Knocking on Heaven's Door"... As Larry and Edge discussed, they had not settled on a direction for the album yet and were still in the rehearsal stages.

February 1986 (estimate): Demos were cut at STS Studios in Dublin with Paul Barrett, which included early versions of "Red Hill Mining Town", "With Or Without You", "Bullet The Blue Sky" & the experimental track "Beautiful Ghost/Songs of Experience".

February - May 1986: Recording starts in Danesmoate, with a 24-track makeshift studio installed there... The main focus at that point was to record the band's jams and improvisations on tape, and capture moments/ideas that they could turn into final backing tracks, or even building on the existing ideas they already had.

Brian Eno was there at the start with engineer Dave Meegan, with Dan Lanois later joining around March alongside engineer Kevin Killen, having just finished Peter Gabriel's So album... Killen recorded the song "Heartland" and further jam sessions, but left due to commitments to Howard Jones' album, thus engineer Flood took his place and became part of the core team.

The recording was done in an intermittent fashion, with Lanois, Eno & Flood coming in for short periods (2-3 weeks at a time) to Danesmoate. The rest of the time was spent on writing & developing songs, listening through jams or re-writing earlier ideas to re-do the next time... They had at least half the final album down in some form by the end - "With Or Without You", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (when it was "Weather Girls"), "Trip Through Your Wires" and "Red Hill Mining Town".

June - July 1986: U2 take a break from recording to fulfil commitments for the Conspiracy of Hope tour... Roadie Gregg Carrol tragically passed away on 3 July in an accident, ultimately inspiring "One Tree Hill". Bono and Ali visit El Salvador in late July.

August - December 1986: Recording continues at Edge's Melbeach home, with occasional sessions at Windmill Lane. This was the point when the direction and recording of the album was coming into focus, and more ideas came to being like "In God's Country", "Exit", "Mothers of the Disappeared", "One Tree Hill" and others... "Bullet The Blue Sky" was also salvaged and re-purposed into its final form. Robbie Robertson would also visit them in late August to record "Sweet Fire Of Love" and "Testimony" for his album.

Lanois continued to encourage the band to record the songs as "live" as possible in the studio without relying too much on overdubs. The whole album would be done that way except "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Mothers Of The Disappeared", which were built piece-by-piece on drum tracks lifted from "Weather Girls" and "One Tree Hill", respectively. By November, they had around 22 songs recorded to choose from for the final album.

14-16 December 1986: U2 do the photoshoot for the album in a desert

late December 1986 - 15 January 1987: Former producer Steve Lillywhite was brought on to help complete and mix the album in time for the deadline. He would be working out of Windmill Lane Studio 1 with engineer Mark Wallis... Meanwhile, Lanois & engineers Dave Meegan and Pat McCarthy mixed at Melbeach. Bono and Edge would still be doing last-minute guitar and vocal overdubs on some of the songs...

For "When The Streets Had No Name", Edge had an idea for a backing vocal part just as they were due to master the album, so Edge laid down the vocal and Lillywhite mixed & edited the track in London to create the single version.

Let’s talk about Rattle and Hum.

I may be the odd duck here, but Rattle and Hum is my favorite U2 album. I love the combination of live and studio cuts, and the Americana influence on the sound. There isn’t a bad tune on the album. Some highlights:

*Hawkmoon 269* : a massively underrated and seemingly forgotten tune. The ominous instrumental atmosphere, Bono’s low range, and the harmonies at “the night has no end” section are some of the reasons I love it. Randomly, Bob Dylan played organ on this. I think he must have happened to be in the studio mainly for Love Rescue Me which he cowrote. Apparently 268 comes from the fact that this is the 269th mix they did of the song.

*I Still Haven’t Found… (live gospel version)* :this is actually my favorite version of the song. The choir just makes me feel so deeply. When the gospel bridge comes in over a distinctly U2 instrumental, it is such a creative and effective hybrid of genres.

Even the covers are good. As a massive Beatles fan, I think I actually prefer U2’s Helter Skelter. They also slay All Along the Watchtower. It’s funny to see the film where they are learning the song moments before playing/recording it live, and noticing that Bono doesn’t remember all of the lyrics but repeats some and adds his own little bit “the rest is up to you” off the cuff.

Speaking of the film…they do come off as a bit pretentious and self mythologizing at times (some of the stage banter feels too scripted), which may have contributed to the negative critical reaction to the film/album. But this has got to be peak Bono (in every way). And I kind of like when they look like they are trying too hard to be cool, because it just shows them being real people. It’s a bit goofy.m but…It’s also exhilarating to watch a band play these massive concerts before in ear monitors and click tracks became standard, having to trust each other on the subtleties of arrangements and doing a bit of improvising.

Are they gonna tour soon

Or are they worried about the blue dot fever? Are they still gonna pack stadiums doing 8 new songs when we got spoilt with Joshua Tree and Actung Baby?

I heard even during the last Sphere run they might do a Joshua Tree 40 and I guess they can play a few new songs there too
