One of my favorites is when Bono added an outro to “With or Without You” during Rattle and Hum.

Darkest U2 lyric ever? “I’m no dope / I give you hope / Here’s the rope / Here’s the rope / Now... swing away”
The image of handing someone a rope and telling them to ‘swing away’ is incredibly dark, especially in a song about addiction and self-destruction.

Two fascinating facts about U2’s “Elvis Presley and America”: Bono’s vocal was essentially a one-take improvisation, and the backing track was a heavily altered/slowed-down version of “A Sort of Homecoming.”
…and it’s my favorite song of all time.
I had always heard that the drums were playing in reverse, but I guess that’s not true.
