Newbie: Independently control horizontal pistons (simple sugarcane farm)

I’m brand new to red stone so I’m sure this is a super basic question. I’ve got a row of 8 sugarcane plants beside a row of running water into a hopper. Simple enough. I have a set of pistons set up to break the sugarcane (hopefully into the water!) at the second height level, and a row of observers above that. So when the cane reaches a height of 3, the piston activates. It’s easy enough to do this such that any one observer triggers ALL pistons. But is there any *compact* way to have each observer tied only to the piston below it? Such that they act independently? It seems doable but unreasonably complicated and extends the build way out to the side.

Similarly, I can’t even easily get an observer to trigger a piston multiple blocks below it (say, for a bamboo farm that doesn’t trigger until the bamboo is taller than 3 blocks).

Anyway, I see people building red stone computers and I can’t even get something this simple to work haha
