Should you send a twelve-year-old into a gas station alone to buy a drink

So I am a divorced dad, formerly a stay at home, dad And I was taking my youngest.

A twelve-year-old to an appointment and we were running late along the way they said they were thirsty. Could we stop at the gas station and et me something to drink. I said fine I asked if they were hungry, they said no. So I pulled into the gas station. Handed them some money when told him we go get a drink i thought I would stay in the car because it would be faster. They came back with a Monster Energy drink. Which I understand are rather like jolt soda used to be. We go to the appointment and all is well. Later that night. I get reprimand from their mother for letting Them get that soda they got a stomach ache later and I should never let a twelve-year-old make their own decisions.

In my mind, the stomach ache should be enough to explain to my twelve-year-old. That they do not like that soda.

To my ex-wife, it was bad parenting.

Is this just a difference in parenting style?

Or was I out of line.
