(Non-stretch) modern alternative to Corfam to recreate a unique strap?
Hi,
Apologies if this is the wrong subreddit. If so, if anyone can redirect me, I'd appreciate it....
I'm trying to recreate a 1960s/70s strap with a unique design (it only fits one specific range of watches that were produced in relatively small numbers). The strap is rare as hen's-teeth. I have bought a degraded one to use as a template and it's actually a pretty simple construction (glued rather than stitched, no edge treatment etc.), so I'm confident I can make decent copies, but I'm struggling to find the right material. The strap was originally made of Corfam, an early 'faux-leather'. I'm trying to find a modern alternative.
Corfam was quite shiny (close to patent leather, but with a grain effect), it was strong and non-stretchy, so unlike modern PU-type pleathers (I'd say more like old vinyl car seat material). Thicker versions were used in shoes, but the watch straps used a thinner version (approx 1mm thick including the backing). Modern pleathers are thicker and stretchy. Corfam's backing looks somewhat fibrous, so it can be thinned/skived at the edges.
Has anyone come across a similar modern product? I know that someone has recreated Corfam and bought the original name, but they don't sell the material, they sell a fixed range of straps in common '60s and '70s styles.
