I’m arriving terminal 5, and leaving terminal 5, two hours later with different flight reference numbers.

Can I book my bags straight through from San Diego to Italy, or do I have to go through customs in LHR, get back in line, go through customs, and recheck my bags? I’m worried about time.

I tried the BA website for questions, and I think I got an AI generic response, not specific to San Diego check in, using different reference numbers, or what needs to be done at BA terminal 5 at LHR.
