Apps autostart in workspace 4, but Niri keeps showing me that workspace on login, any way to stay on workspace 1?

Hey folks,

I've got a small but annoying issue with my autostart setup. Here's the relevant part of my config:

workspace "browser"
workspace "code"

workspace "music"
workspace "chat"

spawn-at-startup "elecwhat" # WhatsApp
spawn-at-startup "Telegram"

I want WhatsApp and Telegram to launch automatically into workspace 4 (named "chat") when I log in. That part works fine. But since workspaces 1-3 are empty, Niri apparently decides to show me workspace 4 right after login because it's the first one with actual windows.

What I actually want: login > land on an empty workspace 1 (or "browser"), while the chat apps silently sit in workspace 4 in the background.

Is there any way to force Niri to always start on workspace 1 regardless of where apps are autostarted?

Thanks in advance!

There is a growing and deeply alarming concern that Google is tightening its grip on Android in ways that threaten user freedom, privacy, and control. What was once an open, customizable operating system is increasingly being shaped by corporate interests, with decisions that many feel prioritize surveillance, data collection, and control over user autonomy.

This trend is not just concerning, it is dangerous. If left unchecked, it could fundamentally change how we interact with our devices and erode the freedoms that Android once stood for. The idea of a user-controlled, open platform is being replaced by a system that feels locked down and heavily monitored.

If we care about digital rights and personal freedom, this is not the time to stay passive. Speaking out, contacting representatives, supporting privacy-focused alternatives, and reducing dependence on Google services are becoming critical steps.

The direction Android is heading should be a wake-up call. Ignoring it now could mean losing the very freedoms that made the platform valuable in the first place.
