Question about resolution and DPI, for commercial printing
Hello! I seek advice from printing Reddit for probably a stupid question. Recently, I have been doing graphic design with some illustrative aspects for some commercial facilities. Many of this is hand drawn/illustrated as the majority (I.e. done in clip studio paint, procreate, etc.) I haven’t been able to wrap my head around dpi. Online, I see things indicating the smaller a print is, the higher dpi it should be, and that things like billboards use 72 dpi because they’re farther away.
I have a 10,000 x 12,000 reso file with an illustration (raster, not vector) and it auto defaulted to 1200 dpi. This needs to be printed- I’m unsure if I need to be adjusting the dpi for this. I don’t know the exact measurements it will be printed to but probably varying since I think it will be printed for a few things. For the sake of the question, i’d say the biggest could be several feet wide or tall, but realistically probably like 20 x 24 inches or something. I don’t want myself to be the cause of an issue sending it to the company at a dpi that’s too high. I used raster because I don’t have the skills/tools to do the type of work in vector so that’s why I used such a large canvas.
-Do I need to adjust the dpi, or can a commercial printer handle the difference or adjustment depending on the input print size? -If I need to change it, what should I change it to? With the examples of if I needed it 10 feet by 12 feet (random example as I don’t know) and 20 by 24 inches (another random example but something that seems plausible a size they could use)
Thank you in advance!
