Just arrived in Christchurch — looking for clubs/activities

27M from Scotland, recently arrived in Christchurch on a Working Holiday Visa. I will be here for at least 4-5 months, hopefully longer.

I've been in contact with a cricket club and hopefully that goes well over the coming weeks, but I'd ideally like to get involved in at least 2 more clubs/activities regularly and meet people along the way.

I'm into football/soccer, hiking, the outdoors, and taking part in various activities. I'm also open to trying sports and hobbies I've never done before.

Is the Christchurch Tramping Club good? Easy enough for new members to get involved? Or would there be better options?

Once I am settled in a rental, I'll be looking to buy a road bike. It seems to be the best form of transport for me around the city alongside buses - and faster too. The only problem is, I have never been cycling on roads before and haven't cycled in years - so if anyone was willing to show me the ropes, that would be very much appreciated.

I'm not really into drinking/partying, so I'm ideally looking for social activities that don't revolve around that.

Any recommendations for good clubs, groups or activities for someone new to Christchurch?

Thanks for taking the time, and I really appreciate any response I get.

Moving to Christchurch on a WHV – hoping to build a more active lifestyle through sport & the outdoors

Hi all,

I’ll be moving from Scotland to Christchurch this September on a 12-month Working Holiday Visa. I’ll be 27 when I arrive, and honestly this will be the biggest change I’ve ever made in my life.

A big reason I chose Christchurch is because I want to become more active, spend more time outdoors, and get involved in sport while hopefully meeting new people along the way. I’ve played cricket for years in Scotland, and I’m also interested in football (soccer), hiking, and trying new activities.

Part of the reason for the trip is that I feel like a lot of time has passed me by at home, so I’m hoping this is a chance to push myself out of my comfort zone and build a healthier, more active lifestyle.

I’d prefer sport to be structured and competitive rather than purely casual — especially for football and cricket. Ideally clubs with multiple teams where I can find my level and become part of a proper club environment. However, I am open to doing some casual sports and activities to get into the swing of things too.

I’d really appreciate any recommendations for:

  • Cricket clubs
  • Football clubs/leagues
  • Social or outdoor activities
  • Good ways to meet people naturally in Christchurch
  • Any general advice and tips for making the most out of this experience!

Thank you so much for reading, sorry for the long post- I am just nervous and excited. Hoping to make Christchurch feel like home for the duration of my stay.
