Any young adults that’ve had success with making friends in Chch?

hey guys, just want a bit of confidence before i start making friends.

my options are: club / bar / social events / reddit.

i haven’t gone to uni yet so i haven’t had many opportunities in making friends. and i also haven’t been actively seeking out for any friends lol.

title is my question. i know there’ll be trial and error with finding the right people, but i guess i’m just worried and awkward about the whole “making friends” thing. im guessing it’s r i was always in an environment where people were present or were forced to interact with. now i actually have to put in the work 😮‍💨

any stories would be appreciated

Health and safety out the window

I was walking my dog down Styx Mill Road today, which is 60 km/hr, relatively busy, and also only has a footpath down one side.

As I was walking I came across someone using a hiab/crane lifting materials onto a site. There was no warning signs, no cones, and the vehicle was blocking the entire footpath. When I tried to explain that traffic management was really required or at least put some cones out, the operator flew off his nut. I started videoing slightly after.

You can see in the video just how far out onto the road any pedestrian has to walk.

I was more annoyed about just how aggressive the operator was, based on some slight feedback about keeping people in the community safe.

Not in the video, him throwing a plank of wood at me as I walked away.

Thoughts??? Is health and safety a dying art…only takes one person to be injured/killed. Everyone deserves to get home safe (including the operator who was not wearing a hard hat).

Possums in the Park

Regular evening dog walker in Hagley Park.

We usually encounter possums at the same locations, varies from 1 or 2 to half a dozen each evening. I’ve heard there is some effort at pest control, but have to say it’s not very effective. Same pests in the same place.
Would happily bring a 22 with me and reduce the numbers, but don’t fancy being the subject of an AOS call out.

Affordable housing through OCHT

(Kinda) vulnerable post - I’m in the middle of applying for affordable housing through OCHT as my mental health is struggling in my current living situation. Honestly I’ve been struggling a long time and I struggle with flatmates in general. I’m pushing 30, single and have no prospect of getting my own place without some help.

Just a few questions - has anyone been through this process? How did it go for you? What sort of rent prices have you had? Have you been offered apartments or granny flat type dwellings?

I’m happy with anything, I’m just trying to gauge what to expect as I don’t know anyone who has been through this. Any advice is appreciated xx

Stanmore npd today

Traffic stuck because people are trying to turn right into the npd and there's a backlog of several cars on the road waiting to turn in... It's their discount day

But petrol is the same price at the station 100m down the road? $3.09 per the sign .

Why

Favourite affordable suburbs

It's divorce time in my household and we're going to be moving off the hill and buying our own houses.

I lived in Woolston for almost two decades and it is my first pick, but I want to hear about other affordable suburbs like Aranui, Spreydon, Hoon Hay, New Brighton, CBD - basically anywhere where I might find 3bdrms for under 600k.

I'm not interested in hearing about crime in the area, this won't be part of my decision making process so please don't talk about it.

I want to know things like what the microclimate like, was it a damp or dry area, is it prone to surface flooding, what is the lifestyle like, travel time, cycle friendly, if you had trouble getting buses or travelling around the city from that area. It is pretty important for me to be able to get to the CBD quickly and easily

Does anyone know anything about this CD?

Hi there, I originally posted this on r/newzealand and someone advised that I ask over here as well so here I am. (I'll just copy and paste what I said over there)

For some context, I live in the UK and yesterday while I was out I starting digging through an old box of CDs that was outside a record shop and I came across something called Mitsuki and the Headless Seahorses, dated circa 2005, recorded at Little River, New Zealand.

It looked really cool, the artwork on it is quite nice. It looks like it was the project of a band that never really went anywhere so I brought it home to investigate it further. I didn't know it at the time but almost all of the songs on it are covers of old folk reels or waltzes, all very short. All of the music on the CD combined barely lasts over 8 minutes.

But I'm more interested in exactly who made it. The liner notes credit four people: Peter, Emily, Rowan and Jonty. None of their last names are written out, but what was written was the studio that it was recorded at: Kahikatea Studios. Googling that however points to a Music Therapy/Charity group that as far as I can tell was founded in 2018. Given that the album was supposedly recorded in 2005, that makes me think the two might not be related. I did email the charity yesterday asking if they knew about it or knew anyone who would be able to help, as of right now I haven't heard back (and honestly, I doubt they will message me back. If anything, why should they help a stranger from a completely different country out on something that doesn't really matter?)

So all I'm asking is if anyone out there knows anything about this CD, if they know one of the people who worked on it. I'd love to know why this thing was made and more importantly, how on earth did it get from New Zealand all the way to the UK?

Thank you for taking the time to read!

Edit: decided to rip and upload the audio on the CD, you can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJjxfBn8XfE

Female friends??

Hiya!! I’m f19 studying at UC currently and would love to make some friends here! I didn’t grow up here so it’s super hard to get into groups. I don’t drink or smoke lol and didn’t realize how much that mattered for socializing here. I’m willing to make friends of any age too!
