AITA for pulling out of a room rental and reacting to a property agent who threatened to get me deported?
For context: I’m 19F, Malaysian, living alone in Singapore for the first time. I’m completely new to renting and navigating agents, still learning how everything works here.
I found a room listing on PropertyGuru at Centro Residences for S$800/month and messaged the agent (Melissa) to ask if it was still available. She asked me to fill in a screening form, name, nationality, race, occupation, lease term, budget, etc. I did. She then told me the $800 room was already taken but offered alternatives in the same price range. I said I was interested in viewing the one on Changi Road and we agreed on Sunday 1pm. I also asked to see pictures first before committing to view and it seemed reasonable to me.
She then noticed my intended start date was Sunday (17 May) and started pressuring me to view that same day or the day before. I explained I was only free Sunday due to work commitments. She confirmed Sunday 1pm anyway.
Then I changed my mind, I’d found other options and the pressure was stressing me out. I told her politely I didn’t need the room anymore. I hadn’t signed anything or paid anything.
She replied: “Wow what a waste of time.”
I swore at her (said what the f*** is your problem, I was trying to be as polite as possible). Not my proudest moment, but I was frustrated after trying to be patient throughout.
Then she said: “Keep going and I’ll make sure you get deported.”
I’m on a valid pass. I asked what evidence she had to deport me. She doubled down: “Like I said, keep going.” She then accused me of being petty, said I “started spewing vulgarities” (I said one word, after she insulted me first), and ended with “OK stay petty, have a good day bye.”
AITA for:
1. Changing my mind before signing or paying anything?
2. Reacting with frustration after being called a waste of time?
3. Standing my ground when she threatened deportation over a rental inquiry?
