Fidelity Background Check has got me SPOOKED

I've signed the offer letter for a position as a planning consultant, it is a huge step for me career-wise and a major salary boost and growth opportunity. (The process of applying to getting an offer took 7 days total, so I figured things would move fast from there, but NOPE)

The background check took me by complete surprise. Here are the main glaring things that could bring some issues:

  • I need to provide 10 years of history, including the first job I ever had at a restaurant that no longer exists. (but I do have old pay stubs to prove employment)
  • I was fired from a retail job 5 years ago. (I disclosed this in the background check, just in case they find out. It wasn't anything fraud of theft related)
  • I have also been doing some off-the-books, occasional administrative work for a small business for the past 2 years as a side gig (this has been disclosed in the background check). I gave the owner of the small business a heads-up and provided their phone number on the background check, since I'm sure they will need to manually verify.

Overall, the background check took me 5 hours to fill out as I listed every single job, even the short-lived ones, tracked down the start date, and figured out roughly when I left based on old statements from my bank.

This has been exhausting, and I haven't even gotten the drug test and fingerprint email.

I don't do drugs, I have never gotten into legal trouble, and the sketchiest things in my background are what I have already listed. But I'm still incredibly anxious to give my resignation to my current job, even though I hate that place. I've done background checks before and never once had an issue, but apparently, Fidelity's are just on a whole other level.

I would like to give my resignation notice this Friday, since the timing would be perfect, assuming I pass the background check and my offer isn't rescinded. But Reddit has shared a few horror stories about their offer being reversed due to forgetting something or an issue with a previous employer.

My current employment is about to undergo a very difficult time at the end of this month, and I'd prefer to leave before I have to deal with that. But apparently the background check takes weeks???

Thanks for reading my rant. Has anyone passed the background check with no issues? Would like some reassurance. (and an excuse to just quit my awful job already)

Edit: It's been about a day since posting this and submitting the background check; they didn't request anything from the first several years, so it seems they didn't care about that restaurant. Someone commented that they only need to verify the past 3 years, and that seems pretty consistent with what they have requested so far from me.

BUT they did ask me to elaborate further on the termination of that retail job 5 years ago. I typed up an explanation, and hopefully that's the end of it. I'll update on the results when I find out.
