Superintendent calls a heat day

For the unaware, the principals and secretaries of all schools are required to stay an extra week after the final day for students. Custodians, however, are there year round. With the extreme heat on Thursday, Superintendent Mulvey let the principals and secretaries go home extra early. The custodians, however, were not given this luxury. Again, for the unaware, summer custodial work consists of moving furniture out of classrooms in order to strip the floors of old wax, lay down new wax, and moving the furniture back into the classrooms. Hard labor, all in the summer heat. With all due respect to principals and secretaries working in the same heat, they pretty much sit at a desk doing paperwork and answering emails. Granted, there are roofers and landscapers working under the sun who don't get a break at all, but how does Mulvey justify giving two out of three of his workers an early release?

Stupid things you learn

How many veterans instantly know, when sweeping a floor and coming across something stuck to said floor, that you...
A: can immediately kick it with your foot, most likely sending it halfway across the room?
B: are going to require a putty knife to remove it?
C: know it's something goopy and will stick to your shoe or putty knife and requires some form of liquid based cleaning?

31 years on the job and I get this right probably about 95% of the time. The other 5%, I have a sticky shoe.
