Information on Ballot measure 2

We just voted on restricting the amount of money that can be given to a campaign this might undo that - not sure because the actual ballot measure wording appears to be unavailable, but these are some of the things it targets:

  • who can vote in a party primary;
  • whether Alaska would return to closed/open/semi-open party primaries;
  • what happens to independent voters;
  • how candidates get onto the general-election ballot;
  • what happens to ranked-choice voting;
  • write-in candidates;
  • special elections and runoffs;
  • vacancies in nominations;
  • minor/third-party candidates;
  • campaign contribution and independent-expenditure rules;
  • and the provisions that would repeal portions of the 2020 election law.

Just took a great trip - want to pass on some info

My wife, two dogs and myself just took a very cool trip - out of the Anchorage area - up to the Denali Highway - the dirt portion of the road was fine - the paved part was slower as we were dodging potholes almost all the time - BTW we were driving a heavy truck camper so had to be move careful than if you had an SUV - After Paxton we went up to Delta Junction and down the ALCAN to Whitehorse - the road on the US side was fine - on the Yukon side from the border to just North of Burwash Landing not so great. The rest of the ALCAN into Whitehorse was good - went down the South Klondike Hwy - stunning - good road amazing views. Stayed in Skagway then back to Whitehorse and took the North Klondike Hwy to Dawson City - road was much better than I expected, Some long construction area that appear ready to pave but were dirt - still could do 50 MPH just a lot of dust (need to change my air filter). Top of the World Hwy was fine, the Taylor Hwy from Chicken to the ALCAN sucked, up to Tok and took the Cut Off to Glennallen it was pretty good up to mile marker 23 then construction and frost heaves slowed us down to around 40 MPH cars passed us going way faster but the camper hates frost heaves, Down the Glenn to home all good - some construction West of Chickaloon but the road was in good shape.

Just a trip report :)

Tie downs tighten and loosen as I drive

Just completed a fairly epic trip from Alaska to the Yukon to BC and back - lots of bad roads, steep grades, washboard gravel roads for miles. I would test the tie downs when we stopped and found some were loose - some were too tight. My camper is an Arctic Fox 811, there is a rubber mat on the bed but I put a piece of plywood under the camper to get the gas line up a bit higher. I am guessing the camper is moving around when we drive. The tiedowns are the kind with solid connections on the back and spring loaded on the front - I found that all the dust caused one of the springs to stop working so that was an issue.

Is there a non slip mat folks use to keep the camper in place and absorb some of the vibration?

Headed up the Richardson Hwy - Black Rapids Lodge?

Some years ago I read an article about the Lodge at Black Rapids, sounded like a very cool place. I will be going by there in a few days, anyone have info on the food - lunch specifically.

Bear warning for South Fork Eagle River

This bear has been sprayed, air horned, and shots were fired to scare it away - it is not afraid of people. Be aware - one hiker sprayed it twice and it came back for more. Do not let your dogs off leash - one dog ran away but as it was a local dog found its way home. If you are not local you dog might get lost.

Ferry from Skagway to Haines

We are doing a loop - Taylor Highway - Top of the World to Dawson City - down to Whitehorse, then the Klondike Hwy to Skagway. We have two dogs (one is a 6 month old GSD) and we have a slip-on truck camper. Thinking about taking the ferry over to Haines and concerned about the dogs having to stay in the truck for over 3 hours. The actual boat ride is a bit over an hour but loading and unloading is my concern especially if it is a warm day. Anyone know how fast they get you off the ferry and how long do the dogs have to be in the truck for loading? I know they can get out and walk while waiting to load but once the process starts how long does it take?

What are great tires for damaged roads

We live in Alaska and drive some not so great roads. So far the ones that came with the truck have held up fine, but when I go to purchase new ones what are the toughest tires out there?
