Since I reviewed the earlier Traveler multi-tool here https://www.reddit.com/r/EverydayCarry_India/comments/1sown9a/review_of_a_traveler_multi_tool/, I realized that this company probably got things whitelabeled/assembled at one of the larger factories mass-producing these types of multi-tools.
On searching Indian sites, I found a couple of dealers who had Traveler tools. Most of them were the same cheap style at varying price points, but I did find this 29 in 1 tool as well. I found this at a site called Adventure Hut. I contacted them over WhatsApp first, and they let me know they only had a couple of pieces in stock. I'd recommend asking them about stocks before making a purchase.
This tool is comparable to the Rocktol, Mossy Oak, Bibury and other brands out there. Most of them vary in the types of blades and attachments. Some newer models by Bibury and others offer removable T shank blades, but they cost more.
These mid-range multi-tools are way cheaper compared to Leatherman (and might not have the same QC and quality level). However, for a fourth or less of the price, you still get a sturdy multi tool.
I got this tool for Rs. 2500 and it contains a bunch of useful tools in a compact package.
Pros and features
- Large blade (very sharp), the blade is not pointed.
- Large scissors (these are very good, and cut through thick material). The thumb rest has a slight curve so it doesn't hurt your finger.
- Sharp aggressive saw.
- File+Ruler (the ruler does not start from the edge so it can't be used as a depth gauge, but the markings are laser etched and fairly accurate).
- Philips Screwdriver, plus attachments for various hex bits. They're magnetic.
- Awl/needle.
- Pliers+wire cutter. The pliers are spring loaded.
- Can opener+wire stripper, Bottle opener, Pull cutter. Also has a flat screwdriver blade.
- Pocket clip.
All of these tools are lockable, which is quite nice. The tool also features replaceable wire cutter blades. The tool quality seems to be very good. The box says the knife is 440 Steel+56 HRC and the pliers are 48, The other parts are 420 steel apparently.
Cons/drawbacks.
- The pliers have a very slight wobble. This was not the case with the earlier tool. This isn't major or a deal breaker, but something I noticed.
- While heavier than the first tool, it does not seem as sturdy, perhaps because of the addition of so many tools.
- The pouch is the same as the earlier tool, and the multi-tool will catch on the edge of the inner pocket. This is a drawback, and I now understand why the manufacturers shifted to a front-pocket system for the bits in newer tools.
- Does not easily open one handed, and I'd be very careful doing so as the knife is very sharp.
- There are different types of 'finishes'. Some of the tools are sand-blasted matt finished, while some are bright steel. Visually, just a bit odd.
Overall, this tool is much better than the cheap Stanley Fatmax or other tools in this price range. When it comes to comparing with the premium brands, some of them are still better, but then the cost-benefit ratio comes into play. Does one want to pay 4X more for something that might arguably be 20% better.
This tool is well made, and will last years. It probably doesn't have any warranty (and no websites either), so that's something to keep in mind.
I've also added a size comparison to the earlier tool and a pliers comparison.
This multi-tool was bought with my own money and the review is not a paid review.
