Post Lyme recovery in dogs
I need opinions please. In December 2025 my 8 year old Shih Tzu X Maltese was diagnosed with Lyme disease. He has been limping and lethargic and after every other test was completed they finally ran the QC6 and determined Lyme. After a month long doxycycline treatment things were getting better in some ways and worse in others. The limp was gone away and lethargy was less but after doxycycline there was nausea, sleepiness, diarrhea. A few other complications came along over the next 3-4 months including higher cystatin B, glucose in the urine, other test results as well that were off but not urgent. Each time the vet recommended wait and recheck and everything seemed to resolve on its own. Then he hurt his back, it was explained as loss of muscle tone from being less active. He has been put on pain management and bed rest, eventually went to a rehab vet and has started rehab treatment to increase muscle tone. NOW I’m getting concerned all over again because his sleepiness seems to be increasing, he seems depressed, down, not wanting to play or run like he used to. He’s on a hydrolyzed protein diet, he’s in rehab, as far as I can tell there is no lingering pain or signs or pain, all of his labs and urine tests have come back perfect aside from a mildly low potassium level. The vet is recommending a specialist next but I’ve already spent over 10 thousand dollars and I need opinions on what I should do next. Is the vet missing something, is this normal after Lyme disease, is there something more I should be doing? I can’t keep spiralling about what could possibly be wrong and don’t currently believe that this is nothing.
