i made a post about my dog last night and almost all of the replies i got were so insanely rude. in my post i said how im barely 18 which i thought made it obvious that none of this is in my control but no. i was called a selfish, bad dog owner, that i should never have had an animal in the first place, my family not being able to afford the vet when she first got sick is somehow my fault for not caring enough, and that its horrible of me to talk about putting her down without her going to the vet first.
obviously i dont just want to put my dog down, shes everything to me but i dont want her suffering. it is very obvious if you saw her now that shes slowly passing and atp there really isnt anything we can do besides let her rest. with that being said, yes we didnt take her to the vet but i personally and my mom have done everything we can to help her. she stopped eating so we found the special homemade food she would eat, she for some reason wouldnt eat out of the bowl so i would sit there hand feeding her each piece, and that alone made a huge difference, they thought she was gunna die months ago but we kept doing what we could and she got better but a while.
and for everyone who thinks its okay to shame someone for not being able to afford it, i have a single mother who usually works so so hard to provide for us. she had to take family leave because my brother has stage 3 brain cancer which btw is very expensive to take care of. u have no right to judge and insult someone when u have no idea whats going on.
i replied to a commented saying how almost everytime we've taken a pet to the vet they told us the best thing would be to put them down which is my MY FAMILY NOT ME decided not to take her. i wanted to take her, even if that was the result i wanted to know what was wrong and help her but it is not up to me.
i made a post for advice on the best thing i can do for my dog because she is my best friend and i love her more than life itself and 99% of the replies were so horrible and inconsiderate.
Any idea what this is?
There are no vets nearby
These are indie dogs
They have this swelling for like past 1 week
Hi all our 6 year old male Lab. has tested positive for Lyme. He caught it even though he was taking a tick preventative.
Currently he is on Doxy and has about 10 days left before he completes the 30 day treatment. Generally he has improved in energy and vitality. I would say all is looking good EXCEPT he does not want to eat or even drink.
We give an I.V daily and if we are lucky he will take a few sips of water on his own. He does not seem to like any food apart from Milk Bones. He used to love food of all kinds. Now he won't eat meat, or rice, or eggs, or kibble or bread or anything. This has led us to having to force him to take food so he will take his antibiotics.
Forcing him to take food I think only increases his aversion. We are giving him anti nausea meds and an appetite stimulant. However, nothing seems to really work.
Does anybody have any suggestions. Thanks, Craig.
He’s a 12 year old beagle and recently today he’s been nibbling that area
idk if this is something that could be related to his health, sorry if this is a dumb question 😓
Advice please! My dog at 2 tampons over a 2 day span (one was 2 days ago, one was yesterday I believe) from the bathroom trash after forgetting to close the door😫 She weighs about 75 lbs, has done this before and has always passed them on her own, but not sure she’s ever ingested multiple which is what worries me. She made a couple hacking noises in the middle of the night last night but other than that has been acting completely normal, eating and drinking normal, pooped twice this morning so obviously bowels are moving, and has the same amount of energy as usual. Anyone ever dealt with this and have any advice to calm my nerves? Should I take her in tomorrow or just continue monitoring her closely since she’s acting fine? I don’t want to have to spend an arm and leg but would rather be safe than sorry. Helppp please
Update: at the vet now. They are going to give him a steroid shot, steroids home, clean his paw up and send home a spray. They said we caught it early so that is what helped him.
I’m going to be one of those people and ask if I should take our beagle to the vet. He’s been licking his front paw and now in between two toes he’s licked it red. I went ahead and put pet safe neosporen and attempted to wrap it(he had it on for about 30 minutes before figuring out how to get it off). I feel like a horrible dog mom for not noticing it. My gut says to take him in just for confirmation there’s nothing stuck or infected but also I’m like what if my pregnant mind is going crazy.
my dog is slowly dying. she lost a fuckton of weight a couple months ago from Lyme disease and apparently they dont gain it back after that so she is like skin and bones, shes eating and drinking well, but she either cant go to the bathroom at all or both pee and poop are just blood clots. shes weak and unable to jump in and out of my bed now. she'll be 9 on june 9th, idk what to do. one day i think shes not gunna wake up the next and then she does and acts perfectly fine like playing a little and just being herself but its less often but i dont wanna put her down if she still has some good life but i also dont want her suffering. i got her when i was 9, im 18 now and ik this sounds dumb but shes my best friend. she genuinely saved my life and i hate that i cant do the same for her. what do i do? i love her more than anything but i dont want her in pain but i cant imagine my life without her
We cant afford vet right now, just wanting to know if ever anyone experience this on their dog.
we have a 5 year old cavalier king charles spaniel who has been perfectly house trained for years. Not a single accident since she was about 8 months old. Until three weeks ago, when she suddenly started peeing in the house with no warning.
What's bothering me is the pattern. It's not happening when we're gone all day, it's happening when I'm literally IN the house with her. Last Tuesday I came downstairs from folding laundry and there was a puddle on the kitchen floor, 30 minutes after she'd been outside. Last night she peed on the living room rug while my husband was sitting on the couch right there.
Nothing about her routine has changed. Same food, same schedule, same walks. The only differences are a new robot vacuum (could that be stressing her out??) and my daughter's friend's cat visited for a weekend, but the peeing started before that.
there's no visible blood in the urine, water intake is normal, appetite and energy are fine, no obvious pain. She seems almost embarrassed when it happens which honestly makes it worse.
I've booked a vet appointment for next Wednesday but in the meantime I'm sitting here wondering what to do. For people who've had a previously house trained dog suddenly start having accidents, what ended up being the actual cause? Trying to figure out if why is my dog peeing in the house is usually something simple like a UTI or if I should be bracing myself for something bigger...
the dawg has suddenly developed this swelling in his lower eyelid, and the bottom of his other eye has also become slightly red.
Any advice on what it is or what I can currently do? We’ve applied a tiny bit of chlorosig and we’re gonna visit the vet tomorrow once they open.
I found a dead/dying bee outside and my dog hadn’t touched. I wrapped it in a paper towel and thought a threw it away, now I I’m not sure if I did. I’m kinda scattered brained. If my dog finds it which is unlikely, can a bees venom hurt after a be is dead. What if it is swallowed? The bee was squished by my shoe so it was recently dead.
I one very small dog (chihuahua mix, like 4kg soaking wet) my wife adopted 2 years ago. quick question for the experts. why do small dogs bark so much because i am LOSING my mind here. my brother in law has a great dane. 70kg of pure dog. that thing barks maybe twice a week and its always for a legit reason like a stranger at the door or food being dropped. impressive. dignified even. my dog has been barking nonstop since 5:47am today at the following confirmed threats to our household: the mailman (fair), a leaf, the OTHER leaf, my kid walking past her, a noise she heard that no human can confirm existed, her own reflection in the dishwasher, absolutely nothing, just barking into the void to remind us shes here
is this the small dog complex thing people talk about or is she just like defective. because i love her but i havent had a quiet morning coffee in 2 years. shes built like a baked potato but acts like shes guarding fort knox 24/7
vet says shes healthy, no medical issue. weve tried the training stuff, ignore the barking, but maam, have you ever tried to ignore 95 decibels coming out of a 4kg animal at 6am while you make lunches for school. its not possible
my theory is small dogs know theyre small and are constantly trying to overcompensate by being the loudest thing in any room. like a tiny CEO with something to prove. but i dont actually know if thats real or just something we say to cope
why do small dogs bark so much actually, and did yours ever calm down with age or is this just my life now until shes 15. im writing this with one earbud in because shes barking at the dryer beeping. of course she is
EDIT: She is not that big!! This picture was taken ages ago I have posted a more recent in the comments
Thank you everyone for your suggestions and comments.
Last night I used an anti fungal antiseptic medicated shampoo I found at the store. This morning she is not itching which is a huge improvement. She is chewing on her feet but only a little bit. I think it might be fungal or a yeast problem.
I’m going to look for a dog dermatologist for n the area as well.
My 13 year old dog has been dealing with nonstop itching/scratching ever since we moved from Colorado to Florida about 5 years ago. The vet says it’s allergies and originally allergy shots helped a lot — at first she only needed them once a year in spring, then every few months, and now we’re at once a month.
She’s on Advantix flea prevention, none of the other pets in the house have symptoms, and we’ve never seen signs of fleas in the house. I’ve tried multiple shampoos and regular baths help temporarily, but usually only for 12–24 hours before the scratching starts again.
She used to take allergy pills, but after years of trying to hide them in food, she completely refuses them now. At 13, I hate seeing her uncomfortable all the time, but I also don’t love the idea of weekly allergy shots — especially financially.
Has anyone dealt with this after moving to Florida or another humid climate? Did you find anything that actually helped long term? Diet change, medicated shampoo, cytopoint, apoquel alternatives, environmental triggers, anything? I’m honestly at a loss at this point and just want her comfortable. lol
He is a 15yr old terrier mix who got bit by something we didn’t see two days ago. We thought he stepped on a wasp so thought he was fine, but he was in a lot of pain so we took him to the er vet about an hour later to make sure it wasn’t a snake. Vet gave him methadone to calm down and confirmed it wasn’t a snake. She gave him antibiotics, gabapentin for pain and carprofen for anti inflammatory.
Next morning, I go downstairs and sit next to where he was laying on the couch. As I do, he gets up and is very wobbly and falls back down. Laying back down his head is still wobbling back and forth. I am worried so I go to my parents room and tell my dad. My dog then walks in and is stumbling and unstable. My dad goes to call my mom at work and I go sit with the dog. Less than 5 mins later he is walking fine again, but my mom still calls the vet who tells her to monitor him and bring him in if it keeps happening.
The rest of the day he is fine until he throws up around 3pm, which is not super unusual for him when he’s not sick/injured and we thought it might have been the meds, though he had only take the antibiotics at around 7am that morning as the swelling/redness had gone down and he wasn’t showing any more signs of pain. Less than an hour later, he threw up again and then two more times within an hour so we took him back to the er. They say it might be the meds and do a blood panel to check liver and kidneys which both look good. They give him an anti nausea injection that lasts 24hrs and then send us home with maropitant for nausea after the injection wears off.
Next day he is fine, takes his antibiotics in the morning and is fine all day until 3pm when he jumps up on me and is wobbly again. I get him to walk and he is wobbly walking. I call my dad and he says he’s not sure what we can do and tells me to film it if it happens again. I think he has gone back to normal at this point. Then I go to let the dogs out and go out with them and he is wobbly and unstable again, which I film this time. When we come in my dad gets home and see him and the video. The dog lays on the couch and still hasn’t wanted to get up for about an hour now.
I want to take him back to the er vet but my parents aren’t sure what they will be able to do. My mom is trying to schedule an appointment with our regular vet.
What could be causing this? Could it be related to the bite? All of his other symptoms are gone except for this, so I’m not sure if it’s related or if it has to do with his age or what. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!
UPDATE: after going to our regular vet yesterday they told us he has old dog vestibular syndrome. This is what was causing the nausea and wobbling and it is unrelated to the bite. Luckily, it should go away in about 2-3 weeks. He is on meds to manage symptoms. Thank you!
My sweet Beni is a 5 years old Bichon Havanese who was diagnostised with IBD 2 months ago. Te vet did an endoscopy and biopsy and it came out he has IBD and also food allergies. The symptoms were not clear at first because he barely had diarrhea but he had a lot of stomac acid vomiting and a jet black poop. He always had a lot of digestion problems and also reflux but we didn’t tought much of it. 4 months ago he also started to poop bloody and he had one bloody vomit. We went to the country’s best clinic where he got diagnostised with IBD,reflux, environmental allergies. At this point he was already on a strict diet and only ate Hill’s z/d. But it wasn’t the best because he had most of the symptoms with this diet. So we tried to change his kibbles to Trovet VPD and also Royal canin anallergenic but those coused flare ups. Any idea but not prednisolon?
I really don’t wanna give him prednisolon because his IBD in his stomack and also in his guts. I don’t know what to do:( I am really worried and out of options. His current medicines are: omeprazol, forthyron, peptonorm, emetron, and stomek, apoquel. The vet clinic also recommended a poop transplantation.
Also we tried hill’s z/d low fat and Trovet DRD.
Every food or medicine change is equals a flare up.
My yorkie about 5 years has eaten 4 chicken wings bones from 711 from about a week ago. Will he be okay?
Been on this sub for years, and I often see the same explanations for why do dogs eat grass and most of them are just wrong.
I owned dogs my entire adult life, currently on a 6 year old border collie. I've read the peer reviewed research on this instead of just repeating whatever my neighbor said at the dog park.
The biggest myth is that dogs eat grass to make themselves throw up when their stomach is upset. Actual studies found less than 25% of dogs vomit after eating grass, and most showed no signs of illness BEFORE doing it. So the self medication theory doesn't hold up.
The second myth is that it means a nutritional deficiency. Studies comparing dogs on different diets found no significant correlation between diet quality and grass eating frequency. (EDIT: yes some individual dogs may have deficiencies, but this claim isn't supported)
The actual likely explanations are way more boring, it tastes good, the texture is satisfying, or it's a learned attention seeking behavior. That's it for most dogs.
People see their dog eat grass and immediately panic, switch foods, or start buying supplements when there's no real issue. Worth a vet visit only if it's sudden and excessive, comes with other symptoms (lethargy, vomiting, appetite changes), or if the grass might be treated with pesticides.
People who actually want the real answer: are you seeing the same pattern with your dogs (occasional, no symptoms, fine), or do you have a genuine case where why do dogs eat grass turned out to be an actual health issue worth investigating?
My mini goldendoodle is 8 months old and she developed a rare disease called IMHA. Her symptoms started manifesting about seven days after her surgery. Took her to the same vet that did her surgery and they performed a blood test and said she had a low red blood cell count and a high white blood cell count. They sent her home with antibiotics and a regenerative anemia diagnosis. Took her to the ER the next day and she was hospitalized for three days after they diagnosed her with IMHA.
I am very skeptical about her surgery and not a big believer in coincidences. I don’t know if that was the trigger but what does everyone think? Should I switch my primary vet?
Hi all! My dog (mini golden doodle) keeps getting recurring ear infections every 2 months. The doc just keeps giving me the same thing to treat it (Mometamax) but I cant keep bringing her to the vet and pay $500 each time for a culture test and meds when its the same thing each time.
Is there anything else I can do beyond the meds to help her?
She is already on hypoallergenic food (hydrolyzed protein, Royal Canin) they keep saying its just her allergies
Thanks in advance!
