Perianal mass FNA showed infection?
Female lab mix, spayed, 10 yo
Has had small lump right below anus for about two months. History of low WBC and slightly elevated ALP.
Diagnosis: Neutrophilic and macrophagic inflammation
Comments: The cytologic findings are consistent with inflammation, the cause of which is not readily apparent. Both infectious (e.g., bacterial, fungal, etc.) and noninfectious (e.g., underlying neoplasia, foreign body, trauma, etc.) causes are considered.
My vet called me and basically said this is good news, it’s not cancer. That being said they still recommended surgical removal. What is the urgency of that? And aren’t FNA not really the gold standard in ruling out cancer? The report still says it could be underlying neoplasia, right? But does “infection” also mean it could just be a cyst?
