[Aug. 19, 2026 SPOILERS] Just a non-American wondering what's going on here...!
SPOILERS FOR THE AUGUST 19, 2026 CONNECTIONS, WORDLE, STRANDS, AND MIDI CROSSWORD!
===========================
I play a few NYT games as part of my daily routine - and this week, apparently the Crosswords are free again! But the games today seem to be getting at something...
First was the Connections - the tamest of the bunch. >!The grid had a red-and-white checker pattern with the words "PICNIC" "BLANKET" at the top. Fun - Connections loves playing with formatting and gimmicks every once in a while, so the pop of color was neat.!<
When my Connections was done, I checked out the Midi. >!The theme title: "Frankly Speaking". The main themers had terms for hotdogs at the ends, complete with graphics of hotdog buns. Okay... someone's hungry, I guess?!<
Next: the Wordle. >!Took me a bit, but got there in 4. The answer? GRILL. Huh. Something's going on here, I think.!<
And the last NYT game I frequent is Strands. >!Nothing wrong with the grid - same dimensions, all letters still. So far, so good. But the theme? "For better or wurst". The Spangram**? "**TOP DOGS". The other words were all hotdog toppings (with colored strands!) and the results emojis were different, too. Hmm...!<
And that's what I noticed! >!Is there anything significant in the US happening today apart from *just* summer, like an event or occasion? Is this another one of those "Letters to the Editors"-styled events, where you're supposed to find something in all these games? Or is it really just as simple as a summery "suns out, buns out" overarching theme?!<
