xstation \ final fantasy 7 black screen after Safer Syphiroth

I hope I've posted correctly, as this is my first time doing this on Reddit.
I've encountered the following problem: I have a PU-18 motherboard, installed Xstation, and it seems to be working fine. I'll be honest: I have a simple Chinese controller and a cheap memory card.
The problem is that I get a black screen in FFVII immediately after Sephiroth's final form. I've tried two different PAL versions of the game (different languages), and the black screen appears in both (there's background music, but nothing else).
I've tried searching online, but no one else has encountered a black screen in this specific spot, so I don't understand what the problem is. Has anyone else encountered this? I suspect it might be the SD card (I'm using the one that came with the Xstation from Aliexpress), or the memory card. At some point, it broke my saves, and I had to spend a long time restoring them (downloading other people's saves, changing their region from NTSC to PAL, and transferring them using a PlayStation 2). After that, I played through the entire game up to the final boss and encountered my problem.
