I just acquired a final fantasy PS1 collection of almost every game. As a younger guy I’ve only played these through emulation, and not yet original hardware.

I was checking the quality of disc, and most of them are very clean on the bottom for the exception of FF VIII which has bad circular light scratches throughout the whole disk. Also maybe 1 or 2 minor deep scratches on a couple disc, but not deep enough for my finger nail to catch when I light run it over.

Also something else that concerns me is I read online that if the label of disc (top of disc) has scratches than the game data is essentially unreadable, and the game is dead, or some point or another will freeze an not work.

I’ve noticed some of these disc in collection do have these imperfections when shinning light through label side to bottom of disc, and was wondering what the general consensus is on this subject. I have a SCPH-9001 ps1, and heard that they have the best laser out of all the models, and was wondering if this would help with scratches on top and bottom of disc.

Thanks for any information it’s very much appreciated. I would think have such a flaw as a disc being completely bricked by scratches on top of disc would be out of possibility, but hey what do I know I’m a young guy that’s only emulated up to this point.

I'm trying to figure out the name of a game i played sometimes when I was a kid. One of my babysitters had a ps2 and let me play their games.

I remember they had a ps1 game that was kind of like final fantasy and sort of looked like final fantasy 7 graphically

I never got super far but i remember the game starts and the main character is like a bounty hunter or monster slayer and hes bathing in monster blood and i remember early on like the first village you go to ends up getting burned down and you have to fight this like succubus demon lady who i think later on can join your party

other than azo and cmc, those arent available in my country.. is the stock verbatim ones good or bad?

So I dug my PSX outta of storage recently and I think the laser went bad. I took it apart and cleaned/greased the gears and rails. Still no luck. I know the laser is at least lifting and it plays music CD’s. My back ups work just fine on my modded PS3 so I don’t think it’s that. Does anyone have any recommendations to buy a replacement?

It’s a KSM-440AEM for a 9001 model. I seen a few places but id rather go somewhere recommended. Tempted to just buy another system, I think a 7501 is the same as the 9001, just with the serial port intact. Seen a few working ones for like $50

So, I know that the disc swap trick can wear down the disc drive, so before I fuck it up, I decided to halt trying to do it after I had some trouble and did a little more research.

If my PSX is SPCH-7501, the disc swap trick probably won't work, even just to install Unirom, right? I've seen some pages that say it won't work and some that say you have to try doing specific methods. I was trying to do it the way I saw on Youtube, where you hold the button down with a toothpick (or something similar) with the lid open and swap the discs once. (I was having trouble with the multiple swaps because my hands are really clumsy sometimes.)

i burned it to a cd and it boots up to the menu fine but when i press start game i get an infinite black loading screen but my optical drive keeps trying to read the cd forever, my ps1 works perfectly normal with any other game including the normal gt2 but idk why the a spec mod does this.. people say it should work, its mod chipped and the optical drive is completely healthy
