Black character - hair writing

Hi!

So I’m writing a black heroine character and I need to understand a lot od things about black hair for it to make sense in the story.

  1. She starts out poor so it’s unlikely she’ll have the money for more stylized or well maintained hair. What would be a realistic hair care method? Styles? She has 3 sisters so they could braid each others hair.

  2. She marries a prince and their wedding night I wanted to talk about the really beautifully done curls when they’re taken care of with a lot of time and product to make them all distinct and they bounce but are weighted with the product so dangle more than poof up. Does that make sense? They look oily and sleek in a good way. How do I describe this? What are high maintenance styles that would be normal for someone with the time/money?

  3. She goes on a long journey in secret at some point to get something back. She will be alone with not much time to think about or do her hair. Are braids a realistic style for this? What would she need to do to her hair before she does this? I don’t want her to shave it all off but she might need to cut some hair off to save herself in the story

I found the tumblr write with color so the word choices are fine but I just need to know more situational knowledge.

I also want to have her hair care talked about like how she gets it done when she’s a princess from the servants. There is a scene where she rolls around in the dirt (for fun) what does this mean for her hair? I imagine it might be a big pain for her depending on the style? It might influence how she plays in the dirt?

Do you have any books or guides to recommend?
