43% on an exam
Turnitin
Hi everyone,
I recently submitted an exam-style assessment and the Turnitin similarity report came back at 43%. I am a bit worried, but most of the similarity seems to come from the cover sheet and Question 1.
For context, all students answered the same exam questions, and Question 1 was a short technical question. Because it was a short 1–2 mark style question, many answers naturally used the same technical phrases from the lecture material.
The report also shows that the largest similarity source is other student papers from the same institution, not publications. The publication match is 0%. Some of my friends also got similarity scores around 38%, so it seems the assessment produced high similarity scores generally.
My answer is not copied word-for-word from anyone, but some phrases and parts of Question 1 are highlighted because the concepts and wording are similar. The cover sheet alone also accounts for a noticeable part of the similarity.
Does this sound like something that would normally be treated as suspicious, or is it likely explainable because everyone had the same exam questions, same cover sheet, formulas, and technical terminology?
