A forgotten gem of Mumbai - Usal Vada

A forgotten gem of Mumbai - Usal Vada

Hi!

I had very recently made a post in this subreddit sharing about our small home run dinner service and the responses have been so great! A BIG Thank You to all of you for reaching out, showing us love and giving us the opportunity to serve you our food!!! Very very blessed.

Today, I am back to tell you about something we are bringing to Manipal. After spending some years here, I understand that there is a surprisingly big number of Maharashtrians. And like many people who have come here to study, Marathi food is something we do not get to see much.

Growing up in Mumbai, I have had the privilege to experience many amazing dishes. One of them, Usal Vada, is extremely close to my heart. It is pure love, warmth and years of history on a plate.

We plan on bringing many items to Manipal, but we thought there would be nothing better to start with than Usal Vada. Monsoon is here and it is time to bring out the cosy foods!

We are starting small for now but please please do give this dish a try. Your love and support would mean the world to us!

We started a dinner service called Banu's Tiffins

Hi,

I have been a Manipal resident for a few years now and I have come to realize that eating properly in Manipal feels like a struggle after a point. I also got a chance to speak to some students studying here and got the same feedback. In their case, it’s either mess food on repeat or ordering out often. After a while you just start missing simple home food.

So we(my wife and I) started a small home kitchen called Banu’s Tiffins. We cook basic homely South Indian (and also some North Indian) dinners in the evenings, Mon to Fri. Nothing fancy, just normal food you’d eat at home.

We’re trying to keep it simple and clean. All of it is freshly cooked, decent portions, proper packaging, not too oily or heavy. We personally deliver these meals across Manipal currently.

We’re also keeping it small on purpose because we want to prioritize quality.

Truth be told, we’re probably not the cheapest option around, but we’re trying to make it feel worth it. We’ve been operational for roughly three months now and we got some really nice reactions, especially for stuff like "Vathakuzhambu".

Right now we’re taking only dinner orders (Mon–Fri). We take pre-orders on Saturdays for upcoming week based on our menu, which we release every week. We have four menus on rotation so there are no repeats.

If this sounds like something you’d want to try, you can DM me and I’ll share the contact details. We have multiple meal options which is why I have not posted the prices.

Also open to any questions you'd like to ask.

PS: I did use ChatGPT for writing this so it may sound a little bot-ish
