Working remotely for a Canadian startup while visiting Canada on tourist visa — grey area?
Hey, looking for some real-world perspective on my situation.
I’m a remote contractor for a small Canadian startup, paid in USD to a Wise account. I’m planning to visit Canada for about a month before officially starting, and I want to use that time to onboard properly. the team is tiny and the one person who can train me is leaving soon, so it’s kind of now or never.
It’s also just a startup and I’d love to get a feel for the company and the team in person before diving in fully.
I know tourist visas don’t technically cover working, but given that:
• I’m being paid from outside Canada (USD, Wise)
• It’s a very short stay
• The intent is partly just to meet the team and get up to speed
…I’m wondering how grey this actually is in practice. Has anyone been in a similar situation working for a Canadian employer while visiting on a tourist visa?
Not looking to do anything crazy, just trying to make a smart start with this job.
Appreciate any insight.
