Writing to publish on KDP has taught me an important thing.

I'll get to the point: Need to learn something? Do the research yourself!

Want to get viral on YouTube? Research it yourself! Google, using AI chatbots, etc.

Want to succeed on Amazon KDP? Research it yourself! Amazon keyword search, competitor research, demand verification, etc.

For every field out there on the internet, when you search for it, you will always come across a "Guru" who tries to suck you into a landing page where they give testimonials, promise things they can't deliver, and literally charge you x10 times what they are offering is worth... For literally something you can immediately find on your own! In a few hours!

I randomly found an opportunity in writing an Amazon KDP book for a topic that I have some experience in. In the course of researching for the book, I had to research about each chapter.

Every. single. time. I would find whatever a guru would charge money for, for free. Without any paywalls.

The best places to learn anything is to read the blogposts of the [insert whatever here] and to reverse engineer successful implementations of that particular idea.

For Amazon KDP, you DON"T need a $2000 academy to learn "secrets of self-publishing". If you know who I am referring to, you know.

You just need a keyword research tool (KDPSpy, Rocket Publisher, etc.) and a means to write the book you want (MS Word? Atticus? Scrivener? Your call). All the rest is literally learnable on your own.

I learned a rule: There is a difference between caring about improving yourself by investing in something and between being lazy and delegating organizing information to someone else.

What I mean by that is that you might think you are smart, a hard worker, and a no-bullshit no-trial-and-error person who wants to cut through the fluff and do it right the first time. However, in reality, your motives are laziness - paying anyone to teach you any learnable skill is akin to literally asking ChatGPT 3.5 with a lame prompt. Trust me, it's as ridiculous.

Don't pay gurus anything! Nothing is rocket science. Do it yourself. I don't want to jinx my niche but I am writing a book in a niche full of gurus and I literally found the to-the-point, actual, realistic best way to do it FOR free. I hope my book sells.

Which is more important, college or KDP?

I have ventured into the world of Amazon KDP self-publishing and I have invested into the best Amazon KDP tools (KDP Spy, KDP Rocket, Atticus) and I have narrowed my niches and got the foundations down.

The problem is, those f'ing exams man. My college is literally crushing me. I can't find the time to write, or do anything.

Is it a bad and a stupid idea if I deliberately delay my graduation by 2 semesters by taking less course loads so I can find time to write? Or is KDP a bad investment?

How can I get good at making books before making my dream book?

As silly as this sounds, I have a dream book that I have ALWAYS wanted to write (non-fiction, self-help on a VERY specific topic). It is literally a problem that millions of people are going through but no books as far as I know have been written on it.

However, if my first ever KDP self-published book is about my dream book, it'd be a waste because I would deliver a sloppy book. I heard that your first few books are ALWAYS bad.

I don't want to ship a bad book on this topic because it matters. Problem is, I don't know what to write about and publish to learn the craft of KDP self-publishing.

I have Atticus, KDPSpy, KDP Rocket, and I have 3 books that I can write about where book1 is my dream book, book2 is my so-so dream book, and book3 is something that I can write about (1,000 searches on Amazon, $2500 avg. monthly income per my tools).

I am so scared, like you wouldn't believe, of screwing this up. I swear my heart pounds whenever I try to draft my dream book. I don't WANT it to fail, ever.

What to do?

How important is the book's cover?

I am planning to write a genuine book. I skimmed through the Kindle catalog and filtered by New and every single book cover looks like AI slop.

I haven't published on KDP before and haven't started writing the book yet, but I think I will have to pay some freelancer to design a good cover.

Are all designers making AI slop-like covers now? I want my book cover to be 100% authentic.

Skills that I can learn to start earning money on UpWork?

Hello!

I hope my post isn't against the rules (This is NOT the subreddit to HIRE or FIND WORK, you will be banned). I am not trying to land gigs but asking about the process itself.

I am a university student and I can't find employment IRL due to my visa restrictions. I am allowed to freelance online, but I have no skills (currently).

I have searched for what I can do, and some suggested AI automation (using n8n) but so many people say it's saturated.

I am not here to make a quick buck - I am willing to learn advanced stuff if necessary, even if it takes over a year.

What skills/niches can I learn from my laptop that would help me land gigs on sites like UpWork? My priority is consistent income that can ease my life a bit - again, I am not here to get rich quick.

Thank you very much and sorry if this post is against the rules.
