Compulsive Question Askers

Why is it that some people cannot engage in a conversation without interrupting to ask about what I am in the process of telling them? And it is not after I ramble and digress. It is immediate and seems like they just want a yes or no answer to what I am saying. Sometimes they phrase their interruption as a multiple choice question. And often, they redirect the conversation to how it applies to them. When I was teaching, there were students who did this, but I made them quit. How do I do that with adults?
