My Old Boss Divulges My Personal Life To Everyone
I’ve been at my workplace for 5 years, and this person isn’t my direct boss anymore — he’s now my director. He used to be my manager a few years ago before getting promoted, so I haven’t officially reported to him in awhile.
When he was my boss, he was incredibly supportive. He helped me navigate my career at a young age, advocated for promotions for me, included me in important conversations, and was honestly one of the kindest managers I’d ever had. I also never heard him gossip or speak negatively about people.
But over the last year, something has shifted, and I’m really confused by it.
It’s not work-related at all — professionally, he still praises my work constantly and has even supported giving me a direct report. But anytime we’re in a social group setting outside of work (team lunches, happy hours, etc.), he starts sharing personal information about me in front of everyone. Things about my boyfriend and his job, personal stories from my past, comments I’ve made privately… just random details about my life that I wouldn’t personally choose to share with a group of 5+ coworkers.
The weirdest part is that he does it right in front of me, then afterward acts completely normal and friendly like nothing happened. I genuinely don’t know if he realizes how uncomfortable it makes me.
I know this is oddly specific, but I’m curious how other people would handle this. I have a really good, high-paying job that I otherwise love, so quitting feels extreme, but I’m also too uncomfortable/scared to confront him or defend myself in the moment. I usually just sit there and take it.
Any NICE advice is welcome. This situation genuinely bothers me, so please be kind :)
