Why do you think Al chose Dolly after Trixie as bed companion/silent confidant?

Dolly was so different from Trixie. Do you think that was the point? Al wanted someone who wouldn't remind him of her? Did he want to move on to someone he didn't think he'd grow an emotional attachment for, that he considered slow next to quick Trixie (a slower girl might not be as quick to leave him, either)? Or is it as simple as him finding her the hottest of the girls in his employ? Odd, then, that he'd first turn to Trixie, who was the opposite of Dolly's type physically; it really was probably Trixie's grit and intelligence that attracted Al even from the start.

All she knows about this blood-covered maniac is that he's coming at her idiot husband with a knife, but she still has the wisdom to uncover William's eyes when he looks their way. And she's right: those cow eyes fucking unman him.

Lou is to Hearst...

...who Trixie is to Al in the first half of season one and who Joanie is to Cy until she gets out. Someone the men in their lives project onto and trust and cherish in their own deeply broken ways, but all these feelings stem from a place of ownership and power. These three big villains in the series all have a lot of similarities in their arcs, including these women who lighten their lives at the expense of their own health and safety. Al is the only one to break the cycle in that regard, which is partly why he earns the status of antihero/antivillain by the end.
