1891-CC Double Eagle!

1891-CC Double Eagle!

The 1891-CC Double Eagle, especially in MS61, was going for 50-70K pre-covid. Then it dropped because of fears that the Fairmount hoard contained a few of these specimens. The Fairmount dump is over and it looks like only 1 1891-CC $20 can be attributed as coming from Fairmount (makes sense since these coins only had a mintage of 5,000)

From an investment perspective, would you spend 35-38k on a piece like this with an eye towards it appreciating back to pre-covid levels?

Question about NGC conservation to remove copper spots on Nerva aureus

Has anyone had success sending something similar to NGC for conservation?

If this were a more inexpensive coin with little premium I would just soak it in a mix of baking soda/water, but for something this valuable I would be reluctant to do so.

Not my coin by the way.

New coin just came in. Finally got an Otho.

I've been looking for one for quite some time. I finally found one that I liked. My main thing was the portrait. I wanted one that shows his wavy hairpiece. A little pricey I think since this was kinda an impulse buy. Total came to €2,100. Roughly $2400. Hopefully I didn't get hosed too badly.

A little game/challenge of tracing a coin's pedigree (for the coin detectives out there) Augustus aureus, Spanish mint, NGC CHXF strike 5/5 and 3/5 surface. Calico 298 plate coin

I've always been curious about the coins history. Who owned it and when did it sell last, how did it get passed down from owner to owner. With my lower end coins obviously no one cares to document them and they just get tossed around. For the more expensive coins however they usually go through auctions.

With this reference or plate coin, it last sold in 2008 at a CNG Triton auction. It is the Calico reference coin and it is also the coin on Numista when you search it by its RIC I 149a. However, other than being the Calico reference coin there is no trace of where it originated.

Using this coin as an example, other than doing image search on acsearch any other way to find out where your coin has been? So I tried it every which way I could for this coin and came up with nothing aside from the 2008 sale.

Let's see what you coin detectives can do!

Coin authenticity check: Roman Aureus, Nero as Caesar. 7.4 grams XRF 98.7% gold

it’s being offered by a coin dealer who doesn’t really handle ancients. It’s part of an estate sale. he’s offering it for $3,000 but he won’t make any representations as to authenticity.

curious what your thoughts are
