NYU CAS Economics ($200K total) vs UCSD Real Estate Development + Finance Minor ($31K/yr) for a career in real estate PE, development, or IB — which do you choose?
Looking for honest input from people in the industry or who have been in a similar position.
My background: I'm 24 and a current community college transfer student finishing my Associate's degree. I'm currently a Property Administrator at a private equity real estate firm in the Bay Area managing a $220M+ institutional commercial portfolio. Before that I managed 400+ single-family homes as a residential Property Manager. I also co-founded my own real estate investment company and completed my first multifamily (duplex) acquisition out of state. I hold a California real estate license.
My goals: I want to move into real estate development, real estate private equity, institutional acquisitions, or real estate IB. I'm done with operations and property management, I want to be on the finance and deal-making side.
The choice:
- NYU — College of Arts and Science, Economics major. Located in NYC. Total out of pocket cost approximately $200K for two years. I haven't received my aid package yet, so this is the worst case scenario.
- UCSD — Real Estate and Development program, Rady School of Management, Finance minor. Located in San Diego. Total out of pocket cost approximately $62K for two years as a California resident.
For people in real estate PE, development, acquisitions, or IB, which do you choose and why?
