The most boring useful AI habit I have is turning receipt photos into searchable image-to-PDF files
This is not exciting, but it saves me every tax season, so sharing.
I photograph receipts and documents on my phone all year and they pile up as random images. Come tax time it used to be hours of sorting.
Now the flow is:
- Once a month I batch the photos and run them through an image-to-PDF step, one PDF per category.
- An AI/OCR pass makes the text inside searchable, not just a picture.
- I ask an AI step to read each one and rename the file with the date, vendor, and amount, so I'm not opening 40 files to find one.
- Everything lands in a couple of folders by month.
The searchable text part is what actually matters. Being able to search "insurance" across a year of scanned paper instead of squinting at thumbnails is the whole win.
Nothing clever, but it turned a dreaded afternoon into something I barely notice now. Anyone else using AI for the boring paperwork side instead of the flashy stuff? What's your setup for keeping scanned docs findable?
