Professional videographers: what do you do and how/when did you start? Advice?
Hi! I’m interested in becoming a videographer and would love to hear your experiences (what your line of work is and how/when you got started). For context, I’ve loved making videos ever since I was a kid and being a videographer was a dream of mine when I was little. I grew up spending my free time shooting videos on my iPod Nano or cheap digital camera and editing them into short movies using free Microsoft software. I made videos for every school project that allowed it, entered local film competitions for kids, and took an editing course in college. Somewhere along the way, I convinced myself a career in videography wouldn’t be realistic or attainable for me, and chased a different path instead.
I’m now in my late 20s, just starting a PhD in this other area, and realizing I don’t feel a passion for what I’m doing like I do for making videos. I still feel a pull in the direction of videography, but I know absolutely nothing about how to do it professionally/make a career out of it. I also know it’s never technically “too late” to make a career switch, but I do feel like I’m a little late to the game after spending years in an entirely different area.
I would love to hear your experiences with working in videography, how old you were when you started, if you got a degree in the area or learned another way, and if you have any advice for me! Thank you so much in advance!
