Professional videographers: what do you do and how/when did you start? Advice?

Hi! I’m interested in becoming a videographer and would love to hear your experiences (what your line of work is and how/when you got started). For context, I’ve loved making videos ever since I was a kid and being a videographer was a dream of mine when I was little. I grew up spending my free time shooting videos on my iPod Nano or cheap digital camera and editing them into short movies using free Microsoft software. I made videos for every school project that allowed it, entered local film competitions for kids, and took an editing course in college. Somewhere along the way, I convinced myself a career in videography wouldn’t be realistic or attainable for me, and chased a different path instead.

I’m now in my late 20s, just starting a PhD in this other area, and realizing I don’t feel a passion for what I’m doing like I do for making videos. I still feel a pull in the direction of videography, but I know absolutely nothing about how to do it professionally/make a career out of it. I also know it’s never technically “too late” to make a career switch, but I do feel like I’m a little late to the game after spending years in an entirely different area.

I would love to hear your experiences with working in videography, how old you were when you started, if you got a degree in the area or learned another way, and if you have any advice for me! Thank you so much in advance!

Is it common to meet videographers and photographers with sensor damage

I was editing a couple of friends works and I noticed there was some sensor damage. My mentor told me it’s a normal thing in the industry and I was wondering how true that is and if so doesn’t it affect the quality of work

Made a horizontal rest for my monopod using a rifle bipod

I just got the iFootage Cobra 3 Strike monopod, but I knew it's sturdy base was going to screw me over one day by giving me a false sense of safety. I needed to be able to set it down easily. I could not find an existing accessory online. I found the perfect and perhaps only thing that fit all the criteria for what I needed. The Osprey Global Bipod. The feet are quick release and has anti-twist mounting with a NATO compatible clamp (The Picatinny/Weaver clamp wasn't completely NATO compatible. I had to modify it to get it to work).

The only downsides are that I can't tilt down as much as before because the grip get in the frame and I have to lock the base in a way that 2 of the feet are evenly lined up to prevent wobbling when laid down or have at least 1 base foot folded up to get a simpler 3-point contact. I haven't decided which method is better.

The build isn't 100% complete. I will likely find better parts for the mounting because I had to pivot from an earlier build where the handle stuck out further. I will likely integrate a rotating rosette so I make the front grip more ergonomic during gimbal operation.

Taxing client

So with this corporate client I have, it’s never come up that I charge tax with my invoices. Should I start adding tax to my charges? I always just took out tax money of the invoice I got.

Need help solving our camera puzzle.

We're a small production crew looking to build out a capable kit for a wide variety of client projects.

Currently we have a RED Komodo and a Blackmagic Pocket 4K and the image looks great but it's at the expense of many other basic features that would make our workflow a lot easier.

We would like to have two of the same cameras that are built for run and gun production or can be adapted to do so. Our shoots range from small luxury real estate jobs, to large brand films, so ideally our cameras could be easily rigged to fit both ends of that spectrum and have an image that holds up for those higher end projects. (within reason).

Image and flexibility in post matters quite a bit to us and we could be willing to compromise on weight if that means we get the image we're looking for.

Our budget is up to $2,000 per camera body so we can focus on a good lens set.

Ideally we'd like something that meets the following specs:

- XLR in (full size or mini)

- SDI

- Built in ND

- Fast sensor readout (ideally sub 10ms but we can be a little flexible there)

- Can be rigged on a gimbal (or has a cheap b-cam little brother that we can purchase in addition to our A-cams)

- Easy PL adapter or PL mount

This has been a tough puzzle to solve and we would love to hear what everyone's favorite cameras are, especially some older cinema options that provide raw recording or a low compression ProRes codec.

So far our list consists of the following cameras but is changing by the day:

Sony FS7II

Sony F55 (I know this would be a tank but it ticks every other box)

VariCam LT (same issue with weight)

Canon R5C

BMD Ursa Mini Pro G2

BMD Ursa 12K (this is a stretch but could be worth it)

If you have a favorite forgotten workhorse and have footage examples we'd love to hear them!

TLDR: Need a sub $2,000 camera body from the last 15 years that could be used daily, has a robust ProRes or RAW codec, built in NDs, XLR, SDI, and an easy PL mount option.

What Mic should I get for a mini documentary?

I am trying to film a mini documentary for my college project. I am not sure what mic to get. Should I get a shotgun mic or a Lav mic (Wired or wireless?).

I also need to make a short film as part of my curriculum. So, would be awesome if you could suggest something that could work for both. (Or should i just dub?)

Please remember I am a student and would really appreciate budget friendly options.

Editing in Van/Moving vehicle

Hey all! Super quick question for ya all. I will be going on tour this summer with a band, and the way our content schedule looks, I will have to do a ton of editing in the van/on the road. Since its concert footage, odds are it'll be fairly fast-paced, 24fps, somewhat jarring footage. I've never actually had to edit in a moving vehicle, but I can only imagine it's gonna make me carsick.

With all that being said, do any of you have solutions that you use? Maybe like a hoodie with a really big hood to block peripherals or something like that? Do they make anything specifically for this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Going from Travel Photography to Hybrid Shooting

Hey guys,

I started travel photography some years ago and I think the results are pretty decent. I usually have a cpl filter on my Sony a6400+ Tamron 17-70 f2.8. now I feel like I want to capture some Videos too. And read that a variable ND filter is mandatory.

Now I bought the k&f concept ND2-400. The problem I just noticed is that with both filters on I get a vignette until like 35mm.

There is no solution -if I want to use both- other then going to a higher diameter in the filters right?

Has anyone tried this?

Hi all,

Recently in a bit of a pickle and needed to get a suction cup w/ boom arm for cheap.

Has anyone tried this? And does anyone have any tips in general for using things like this?

I'm using it on a vehicle (gator 4x4) and hopefully with a DJI pocket 4.

Thanks in advance!

What's your favorite thing you've filmed this year?

How to match colors between different cameras for live stream?

For a church event live stream there are 3 cameras:

  • A FoMako PTZ
  • Canon Vixia HF G50
  • Sony A6700

I want to try and match the colors between Canon and Sony at the very least for the live stream

Capturing through Atem.

Streaming might be either straight from Atem or OBS for Mac.

Thank you all for your help!

Client wants 300GB of raw footage delivered on Google Drive

I recently wrapped up a shoot with a client. In my initial contract with them, I offered all of the raw footage filmed delivered via hard drive.

I shipped the hard drive, but a month later, they're now asking me to upload everything to Google Drive. I explained to them that we have hundreds of 4K 10-bit shots and that uploading and downloading would be a multi-day endeavor.

I offered to send another hard drive, but they're insisting on a Google Drive now.

My upload speed is basically capped at 20mbps, and bulk uploading to Google Drive never goes well.

How do I navigate this? What's my overage?

Canon R6 V

I was looking at grabbing this body as a small cam for travel, social brand content. What is concerning me is the storage required for 7k open gate, looks like it’ll need a 2tb cf express card to make the process non stressful. In the UK these are around £1000! Any ideas? Thanks 🙏

How to get a perfect gimbal orbit?

I’ve been gimbaling since the original Ronin and it shames me to admit but for the life of me I’ve never been able to get an orbit where the gimbal doesn’t deviate. Even with RavenEye.

Can anyone claim to have mastered it and what is the secret sauce? Talking DJI here.

And please can we avoid “get good bruh” comments.

Much appreciated

Why don't my videos look like movies?

Hi

So for a whole now I've been pursuing making short film like videos of daily occurrences in my life. But even though I try to light cinematically and tell a story and everything, my videos dont actually feel like movies. I do use film emulation but I dont think that has anything to do with it. Lack of fill exposure maybe?

I attached still examples. First three are mine from a recent video, last 4 are stills from a video also on YouTube that felt like a real movie to me.

Sand on underwater housing Sony a7iv

Hey guys, underwater videographer/photographer here (Scuba).

Since I have the gear a also a lot of friends surfing I decided to go for a test at Surf photography 🏄‍♂️

I had a blast, 1:30h in the water hustling with waves and my Seafrog housing for my Sony A7iv handled it quite well (no leaks).

So I got home and gave it a long soak, pressing all of the buttons multiple times but when I opened it I seen a lot of sand on the outer O ring.

Is it normal, should I be worried?
