Thoughts from the Odyssey

I recently saw The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm. Had to buy the tickets 3 weeks out but had some thoughts on the format as well as the way they’re trying to release more movies in the 70mm format.

Social media has shown us that attention can be captured with potato quality and terrible filmmaking as long as the subject matter is interesting enough. Think those old school fight videos, shaky blurry camera, action is 50% not in frame, etc…

The Odyssey is about as far away as you can get from that. The subject matter is a story from ancient folklore vs unscripted chaos, and the production value is a benchmark for modern movies.

At a point in my videography career I started to lean into my cameras abilities to differentiate from phone creators or brands doing in house intern style content. As I leveled up from being a glorified social media intern, I got a better body and really started leaning into the colors, resolution and high frame rates (240). I also started using lights much more, often debating with clients and partners whether it was needed. I was going for max polish.

Then for a while I realized I may be missing out on the story and the relational aspects of video so I worked on that and let up a bit on the production quality.

What I took away from the Odyssey is that polish is ok, and it isn’t a sin to add shots just because they’re cool! Of course the story was there with the Odyssey and the acting was great but everyone already knows the story. I also feel like Nolan’s whole shtick about the IMAX cameras is part of it. Why does he do all that? Definitely not to hit budget goals lol. I’m going to go back (in some ways) to doing stuff just because it’s cool! Even if it doesn’t 100% serve the story or narrative, gotta add a little spice.

Canon C50 File Naming?

Has anyone found a way to get the C50 to name files in any kind of linear or quick to read way?

On a lot of the files the last few digits are the same and there’s no good way that I’ve found to quickly skim thru and check that everything’s there or pick out a couple files quickly.

Pit Lane Speed Measurement?

Is anyone sure how the pitlane speed is measured? If it’s a simple distance/ time calculation with timing loops it seems like it’d be very easy to mess it up by shortcutting slightly. Also if that is the case I wonder how faster/ long pit stops are accounted for?

“Reality Show” audio

I’m getting prepared to shoot a reality style show with 3-4 main characters for a YouTube series. I was curious about how to best go about getting audio for anywhere from 1-5 people. Shotgun seems to make a lot of sense but also if they aren’t super close to each-other, or there’s a lot of noise due to the activities they’ll be doing for the show, it may get tricky.

Would the best answer be to just mic all of them? Curious as to the best way to go about that. Currently I use the DJI Mic’s and lav if going for more polished look but that’s obviously only good for 2 people at a time. Due to the budget it will be single cam at least for the start so timecode and syncing multiple cams isn’t really a concern at this stage.

Edit: shooting on the C50 w/ 2 XLR ports

Is Gucci the right type of sponsor?

F1 has lost the plot as far as engine regs go which is a total shame as these current aero/ chassis regs are phenomenal!

They have allowed automotive manufacturers to push for greenwashing despite it not serving the goal of being the pinnacle of Motorsport. They claim “road relevance” is the reason for this and that they’re not interested in F1 if it isn’t road relevant but I’m wondering if that’s the case why Honda isn’t also pushing for CVT’s since a large majority of their road car lineup have CVT transmissions. Audi and Cadillac’s best selling models are both SUV’s with the Q5 and Escalade. But both Ferrari and McLaren’s best selling models have a V8 in the 458 and 570s, so why aren’t they insisting on V8’s since that would be more relevant to their best selling vehicles. What about traction control, couldn’t they market their electronics packages in the street cars by showing how well they do in F1. There’s a ton of ways to make the cars more similar to various brands road cars and to use it to market various aspects but those things don’t serve the goal of being the best race series in the world.

I think brands like Red Bull, Gucci, and other non automotive manufacturers could be more interested in the overall prestige of F1 as a sport and would support a set of regs that will make F1 as exciting to audiences as possible because that’s what they’d want their brand associated with. Maybe they could bring in 3rd party manufacturers like Cosworth or Judd to supplement engine supply for the grid if any manufacturers leave in reaction to a change like this. Looking at some of the F1 Academy sponsors, maybe Lego could be convinced to move up, Amazon, Apple, etc… plenty of brands that have the budget for something like this that aren’t auto manufacturers.

Do you think it’d be bad to see a Grid with Ferrari, McLaren and a bunch of non auto brands?

Visible lav wire…

With so much debate over the wireless mics and so many cheap wireless options I haven’t seen a video that had visible wired lavs like this.

I think this looks way worse than just holding a wireless mic or even using a magnet or clipping it to a collar. Curious for Reddit’s

Personally, at the start of my career I always used a wired lav w/ the OG DJI Wireless. I often ran into clients needing a lot of help with it and found that just using the transmitter was faster and easier and resulted in a lot less digging around in people’s shirts lol…
