Went proper foraging for the first time, found a whole bunch of stuff!
I’ve always had a passive interest in foraging, but recently I found a mulberry tree by my house, and that was the push I needed to go see what I could find in a little forest thicket near my house.
Got to try black raspberries, serviceberries, and garlic mustard, all of which are great! I’m super excited for more of the berries to ripen so I can maybe do something with them, and I’m hoping to make something with the garlic mustard since the flavor’s really interesting. I also found some wild blackberries that I’m very excited to try once they’re ripe, and some honey locust saplings that probably won’t fruit for a long while lol. And a pawpaw tree that I’ll hopefully get to in September!
I stuck entirely to plants that have either very distinct identifications (aggregate berries, strong garlic smell) or that don’t have any dangerous lookalikes in my area (serviceberries), and I sent everything to a friend who’s more experienced in this to vet before I tried it, as well as checking several non-AI sources on google. Also made sure to leave plenty behind wherever I could, though I did take one of the two ripe black raspberries. Very excited to go out again soon!
