I'm going against everyone.
I'm a 14 years old Malaysian student and it's about time to choose my study stream. In Malaysia there's science, commerce and arts. For credential efficiency reasons, people with flying colors are guaranteed to get science, while those who don't get the latter.
Here's the thing - I have indeed made decent scores in my study, in fact a few places at the front of my school, but I don't want to get into science because I enjoyed business and finance. Most science subjects, like biology and chemistry have too much names to memorize in my opinion, while commerce study can shape my dream really well.
And god forbid I try, everyone around me despised this idea. Family, relatives, friends, teachers, everyone. They think I have the potential to fight for a listing in university where I can get better job applications. They would even use up threats just for me to stay at science stream, never letting me make decisions by myself.
If you have read the book Zero to One by Peter A. Theil, you may know that competitions consumes the true profit from everyone involved. I don't want to fight with every other student, nor do I want to get into debt just for a useless 9 to 5 job, I just want to cultivate my money managing skills and that's it. I wished what Zero to One said was not true but it proved it instead.
I don't know what to do - left stranded against literally a horde of everyone else for my dreams, or sacrifice my dreams for a peace of mind in society. What do you guys think?
