Is a quote the same as an invoice or are they completely different?

I’m a little confused about the difference between a quote and an invoice when dealing with clients and small business work.

Some people seem to use the terms interchangeably, while others say they’re completely different documents. From what I understand, a quote is sent before the work starts and an invoice is sent after, but I’m not sure if that’s always the case.

How do you handle quotes and invoices in your business, and what’s the main difference in real world use?
