Sleep Terror - Probing Tranquility
Even though the term “underrated band” gets thrown around a lot these days, Sleep Terror is one band that genuinely deserves more discussion, especially when talking about the foundations and evolution of early Technical Death Metal.
Probing Tranquility is packed with classic TDM energy: relentless riffs, insane transitions, and absolutely incredible solos.
The songwriting and riff structures on this record feel like a blueprint for so many bands that came afterward.
The album dropped in 2006 which was the same year Noctambulant by Spawn of Possession was released. Looking back, that had to have been an absolutely insane year for the genre. I was only about two years removed from my first exposure to TDM at the time, but even then, Sleep Terror always felt like one of the top bands in the scene alongside Spawn, Deeds of Flesh, Necrophagist and Obscura.
If you’ve never listened to this album, definitely give it a shot. Honestly, all of Sleep Terror’s material is worth exploring. They even released a bizarre and surprisingly well-executed “country”-styled album that showed just how creative and unpredictable they were (Above Snakes).
Sleep Terror...probably your favorite TDM Band's favorite band. Shout out to Luke Jaeger (Yo go check out Chasing the Pipedream by him as well)
