Possibly the most ridiculously underrated tech/prog death band? Gigan appreciation post

American progressive / technical death metal band, also under the umbrella of “dissonant death metal”. Other than just being good, there are a few unique points about this band. First of all, it’s the only metal band I’ve ever heard to use musical instrument theremin. Actually, it’s the only band to use theremin that I’ve heard period. For those who never heard of it, it’s a musical instrument that is being played by waving hands in the air, creating certain ‘electronic effects’. Second, while a lot of other dissonant bands tend to lean into dark sound and lyrical themes (including some esoteric and occult, etc.), Gigan goes into drastically different direction with some crazy sci-fi space psychedelic trip stuff, in just really stands out. Starting from their second album they also developed their own unique production style, you really can’t confuse them with anybody else. If you are into stuff like Gorguts, Mitochondrion, Portal and Ulcerate, then Gigan is an absolute must have, personally I think Gigan blows away Ulcerate by very far.

Is this tech enough to over look it’s core aspects?

From an instrumental standpoint, this album is a beast and deserves its recognition for how intricate and unique all of it is. How do we feel about Marc Okubo as a guitarist?

Question for the Cryptopsy fans

Basically i just wanna know how many of y'all who stopped listening after The Unspoken King came out came back after the Tomes and Self Titled dropped....have they regained your trust? I personally love mostly everything they've done besides, yes, a couple tracks off Unspoken King and a few earlier tracks off the first 2 albums as well honestly but im a diehard fan till I die🤘👑🖤🔥

Got in the merch line as soon as I got into the venue.

Hilarious and amazing show last night! Mutilation Barbecue was good. Undeath was fantastic and a must see for anyone into Old School Death Metal. Obviously Archspire was the highlight and outside of the vocals getting a little lost in the sound, it was an awesome experience!

I'm pleading the fifth on Crown Magnetar.

Edit: Reddit was severely fucking up earlier and spammed this 4 times and I couldn't delete it, my apologies.

Obscura live

I’m aware this question has been asked here plenty of times but they’re coming to my city along with another band called dvrk and I was wondering if anyone here has seen them live recently and if it’s worth it.

If hannes and Christian were there I obviously wouldn’t be asking this question as I love all their albums except the latest one

Landmarks of techdeath (timeline)

I made a list of some of my favourite — and what I think are some of the most important — across the lifetime of the genre. I think it's quite poetic that things have really come full circle with space themed jazzy/proggy thrash influenced tech with the mew cryptic shift album.

I do really love a list. My musicboard account is bankswole and rym is beankole for anyone who is interested. I rate or review literally everything I listen to. What do you guys think of this list?
